April Catch-All
WHO: Yuri Leclerc
wolfish & others
WHAT: Catch-all for April
WHEN: Late Pelu
WHERE: Various locations
WARNINGS: None, will update if needed.
I. Resupply Run (Old Springstar)
[ Yuri isn't yet acclimated to Skysong. In truth, he's not entirely certain how long that adjustment is going to take. Adaptable as he is, he hails from a world in which mass literacy is nonexistent and flight entails mounted travels. For most men, that's wyverns.
Seeing how it's been over a century, the house needs some creature comforts. Given the improvements to local technology, this day that means Yuri's drifting from one store to another examining their new wares.
II. Old Routines (Alenroux)
[ While the world has changed a great deal, developing in ways Fódlan certainly hasn't, some things are near enough to the same. At least, Yuri tells himself as much, holding to whatever scraps of familiarity if he can. For him, that means resuming the activities he'd used to pass his time previously.
In this case, Yuri spends the "early" daylight hours in Alenroux training. When he doesn't have a partner to spar with, he instead rigs up targets using whatever he can find — old buckets, broom handles, fallen branches — and slings spells their way. It's a flashy bit of a show that comes in two flavors.
Sometimes, visually identical magic strikes the target much more feebly.
Others, Yuri tosses one spell at his training dummy, then another, different spell, observing how they combine. In these cases, the answer is usually that his constructed target gets blown apart, its shredded components sent sailing in all directions, leaving him to sigh and trot off to retrieve them. ]
III. Free to Good Home (Communion)
So... Turns out before Fluffy joined Byleth for that incredibly long nap we all took, he found himself a sweetheart or two first. Now, we're swimming in cats. Much as I'd like to think looking after tham all is doable here, I'm not thinking it's ideal for them.
[ The cats, that is. Fellow Harbingers may be treated to fleeting mental images of cats and dogs milling about the grounds of Garreg Mach Monastery, uniformed students and recognizable clergy pausing to pet, feed or play with them. Then, too, are images of people who are evidently thugs and brigans...still fawning over cats in the underground halls of what some might guess is Abyss.
Yuri can't help the strength of his nostalgia in this. He spent a fair amount of time pining after feline affection due to just how bad his allergies are, not having the means to overcome them until he admitted his troubles to Marianne. By then, they were in the midst of war, far from Garreg Mach.
At least he's not sneezing to death now. ]
So if anyone's interested in giving a good home to a cat or two, let's make some arrangements.
[ Apologies in advance that they may answer to odd names already. ]
IV. Wildcard
[ ooc: If you have a different idea, feel free to drop a starter here! No need to plot ahead unless it needs some prior coordination. If it does, DM Yuri's journal or hit me up on discord (matchadrop)! ]

A. Background Character
[ Occasionally, this leads to him being stopped by strangers who begin regaling him with their backstory. The prevailing trend here is that it's always something about their parents or grandparents — people Yuri either saved or helped. Orphans who moved on to have happy lives and families.
The thing is, Yuri doesn't know what to do with effusive gratitude. So, without fail, he'll be standing there like a deer in the headlights, clutching some kitchen gadget or other like a lifeline, in the face of strangers' enthusiasm. ]
B. Gadgets and Gizmos
[ On the occasions when Yuri manages to evade what's proving to be a small army of orphans' descandants, he spends his time examining the new innovations Old Springstar has to offer. Each time he encounters a new appliance that is neither enormous nor impossible to lift, he picks it up for manual examination, turning it about between gloved hands with rapt interest.
It may or may not be clear to passers-by that this is something beyond curiosity in the sight of something novel. Rather, he appears to be trying to discern what makes it tick. ]

In my experience, the effect's always prioritized over making medicine palatable. On the one hand, you want it to work, but on the other...someone has to be able to choke it down and keep it down.
[ From Jade's description, that's a genuine struggle with this Ambrosia she needs to take. It'd be preferable for it to at least be more tolerable, and he does think that's something he could do well enough. While he's no alchemist, goddess knows Constance has involved him in her wild experiments more than once in the past. ]
And who knows, someone may have done it and simply didn't share with the class.

[Even before her magic was a thing, she'd always struggled to take her "medicine".]
Y'know, with how averse folks are to progress in most countries, there's a high chance that's probably the case. [She chuckles joylessly, cradling her head for a moment.
[After a moment, she opens her eyes once more to find the world in relative normalcy again. For now. Yuri's face isn't melting or changing or disappearing, and the people seem to be heading in the direction they're supposed to go. All is well.]
At any rate, I know it looks bad, but it's actually gotten better. At least I'm not hearing the voices as much anymore.
[Which sounds pretty bad on its own, even without the magical affliction.]

[ Dimitri hears voices, he knows. Heard voices. Judging by the occasions when Yuri had meant to visit their little makeshift chapel to pray and found Dimitri pleading with empty air, his young king still does. Perhaps he one here has recovered enough not to.
No doubt that all comes from trauma rather than anything mystical. Jade, on the other hand... ]
Is it the dead?
[ Venturing what he believes to be a fairly safe guess. ]
no subject
It's... more complicated than that.
[She'd explained it to Dimitri and Alice, so she at least knows how to explain it in a way that might be easier for one not from her world to understand:]
To put it simply, it's my magic. Due to the nature of it, I get sick sometimes, if I don't manage it. And, well, after 114 years of not actively managing it, the negligence has taken its toll. But as long as I'm not passed the point where I'm turning into an undead, I'll be fine. Headaches and hallucinations I can handle. Having pus and boils all over my body... that's another story.
no subject
[ Yuri won't equate himself to people who sink everything into the healing arts, but he gets pretty damn close. He'd made a point of being prepared to help others when there wasn't a healer around, ro drag them into stability and keep them alive until a surgeon or cleric could come along.
Boils are well within his means. Pus isn't pleasant, but that'd mean infection. He can treat something like that. ]
Besides, I owe you one for bailing me out. I make it a point to repay my debts.
no subject
"Healer" as in a physician, or in magic...?
[Because there's a distinction between the two, at least in her world. And the same seems to be the case here as well. But there's a reason Jade never sought out magical treatments for her ailments -- ever.]
no subject
I learned both. Can't know which you'll need until you need it, yeah?
[ Yuri had made a point of picking up field medicine on top of his magical acumen. He's seen the merits of both, and the professor at Garreg Mach who doubled as their nurse upheld their value equally as well. ]
no subject
Anything but the magic option, please! The last time someone tried to perform a ritual to help me with something like that, it almost, like... blew me up? Supposedly it has something to do with my aura, or whatever. No one really knows. I'm just, y'know, a walking anomaly, I guess.
[Despite her nervous laugh, the reality of it is not really that funny. Even if her magic might react differently to whatever methods are used in other worlds, Yuri would probably feel bad if his efforts ended with her bones getting crushed instead of her Fever healed.]
no subject
Let's stick with medicine, in that case. I'd safely say I'd prefer you in one piece.
[ He'd already picked up on her aversion to healing magic, but damn. What cruel deity thought it'd be funny to curse her in that particular way?
It's a question he doubts he'll get an answer to. ]
no subject
[Most people who aren't sociopaths who would be interested in cracking her open to see what makes her tick. Which Yuri does not seem to be the type.]
Anyways... To date, Ambrosia's really the only medicinal treatment. That isn't the "self-medicating" variety, that is. [Too bad smoking Peaceweed only does so much in the terminal stages of the Fever.] But if there's a way to better concoct it, or something like it, that would be an improvement enough for me. I could even give you a sample, if you think it'd help. Mine's shit, but maybe a proper alchemist can do one over me.
no subject
[ When it comes to making something palatable, he's king. Better yet, he knows a mage or two he could speak with concerning the formulation once he's got a sample. If it can be further improved for Jade's usage — and for her safety — then so much the better. He needn't tell anyone who it's for.
What he will have to do is understand its usage better, though. ]
So do you know how this ambrosia works, exactly?
no subject
[Since Jade hadn't been staying at Heliopolis and has taken more to just... drifting lately, she's been carrying what all she owns. She quickly fishes out a small phial from her backpack to hand over to Yuri.
[The contents of the phial are a pale, milky hue, and thick like sap.]
As for how it works... I dunno. Might be easier to just see the stuff for yourself. I managed to find some places close to an alchemical still that I could work with, but this is what I've got left for now. I should warn you, it smells as bad as it looks... and tastes even worse.
no subject
That bad, huh...? [ He uncorks the phial cautiously, giving it a sniff, and promptly cringes. The cork squeaks back into place right after. Goddess, that is truly foul. ] Now I see what you mean.
[ This should have been enough incentive for someone to make changes to the formula, but maybe now's the time for it. ]
If you don't mind showing me how it's made, I'll see about making this more tolerable.
no subject
I could show you, sure. There're a few establishments I've found in Old Springstar that let me use their stills... for better or for worse.
[The owners are probably just grateful she didn't blow any of them up in her "trial and error" efforts at making the potion in the first place.
[Then her expression is forced neutral.] Skysong has some places, and I'm sure are better equipped, but. Not really my scene.
no subject
[ Yuri palms the back of his neck, idly glancing at their surroundings. Old Springstar was a far cry from home, and now people from Kowloon had come topside, for better or worse. Even so, Skysong feels utterly foreign.
It's not theirs. It's not the place they settled into. ]
Bit too new and shiny for my tastes. If Byleth's house hadn't been lifted up there, I'd sooner set up in more familiar territory.
no subject
[Jade hears herself blurt before she reminds herself that not everyone is like her. She pauses, idly scratching at her forearm bearing one of the many glowing bones on her skin.]
...Sorry. I know not everybody is comfortable with just packing their shit and moving when things get hard. Guess I'm in a kinda unique position of privilege where staying in one place for long periods of time was never really an option for me.
[If you could consider her time on the streets to be a "privilege".
[And she's doing it again, even when she doesn't necessarily have to. But it's what is familiar, and what's familiar is less scary.]
no subject
[ It's a hard life, he knows. Ever since the Empire attacked Garreg Mach, those who lived below it in Abyss have had to do that very thing, Yuri among them. They'd taken up mercenary work, mostly, and it was far from an easy life. ]
It's about things getting hard here...just a matter of atmosphere. We've woken up in a foreign place all over again, and much of what we knew is below Meridian's seat of power now.
[ He's always been the adaptable sort as a matter of necessity. Even now, Yuri is studying Skysong's laws to have a better grasp of what they've woken up to. ]
no subject
You're right.
[It's not a luxury, but Jade at least has had the advantage of not being as affected by the changes as those who seem to have made a home for themselves in this world.
[She sighs, rubbing the back of her neck.] And I can't say I'm particularly thrilled by Meridian's life choices since we woke up, but I guess ideological similarities came secondary to the whole... end goal.
[Jade joined Meridian because she wanted to give her world a chance to be saved, not because she agreed with their methods of governing their people.]
no subject
[ Yuri doesn't mask his disbelief, yet he hasn't heard anything to disprove Voreen's claims. There are myriad reasons one might stah below — odds are he would have — but it doesn't make these changes in scenery any less drastic.
The scars of the attack that Springstar had endured are easy for any of them to see. ]
Voreen apparently was there during the invasion Zenith launched, and that sort of thing doesn't leave people. Not if it's not commonplace, at least.
