THE ADVOCATE ORACLE - A RIP VAN WINKLE IN TIME

Sweet dreams are made of Bliss
As the twilight falls, and bearers begin to tuck in for their evenings on the night of the 15th of March (OOC time) and whether they tuck themselves into bed fully, or simply drift away in the middle of their dinner, work, indulgences, or what have you; bearers will fall into a deep, deep sleep. Perhaps you slump in your chair, or you wrap your arms around a teddy bear, or partner, or cup a precious shard in your sleep, it doesn’t matter, because as you drift away, into a sleep that seems to tug you under like the undertow itself, a question will echo in bearer’s minds: “If given the choice, would you show compassion in the face of adversity?”

It sticks with you, even as you fall into a dreamless sleep. As if it rotates in your mind, over and over, letting you worm over that. You know for certain what it is, that it is the calming, soothing voice of the Oracle, reaching out to you across the ether, telling you – promise you – that if you accept its promise, you will find that the Oracle could be in your hands. That thought leads you to dream of something else – of home, or your loved ones – of what you are fighting this war for. Even as you dream, you feel a presence next to you, and unlike the Harbinger’s winding, rough digging, this is more akin to a friend, who is asking you soft, coaxing questions. Things like: what was your childhood like? What were your friends like? What did you do? You cannot help but think of them, think of your home and your loved ones. Of where you came from, and how it made you what you are.

The advocate seeks to understand you, and where you come from. You can feel it, that overwhelming Acceptance and love from it, even as you reminisce, compelled to answer the multitude of questions, you can feel something building behind you, around you. “Don’t you want them all to understand this?” the impression is given through communion, and you cannot help but answer: yes.

Click your Heels together, Dorothy!
As you awake for the first time, it’s alien, the world that meets you. New smells fill your nostrils, new sights, the gravity is perhaps different than you’ve gotten used to on Kenos, even those slight shifts enough to make the world feel wholly different. You remember the advocate’s words, and it wants you to feel what it feels. Understanding. Compassion, and perhaps there is a sense that doing so would hurt yourself in turn, if you understood too much. That is the advocate’s way, after all, isn’t it?

You feel an inexorable, slight tug in your chest. Something subtle and gentle, the slightest of sensations, that gives you a direction. You know it, your mind only just now comprehending the advocate’s confusing impressions via communion, that there is something of this world’s… Soul/center/heart or whatever word you want to use for it. Something about this world that will help you along your path, and help you with the results you so desire. You know it will not guarantee a victory, but surely it will help. Especially as your numbers dwindle from world to world. You are left with an impression from the Advocate -- if you die, they cannot bring you back. There is apology in this, but alone, one oracle is limited. Only united, can they truly change your fate.

The lingering presence of the advocate starts to fade. You know this is a bearer’s world, if not your own. You look around, to see perhaps a familiar face nearby? Or perhaps you are alone. Does it matter? You know that this place belongs to a bearer, but whether they are a friend or an enemy, one has to begin to determine that. You’ll need your wits, you’ll need your strength and resolve to make it to the end of this, won’t you?

After all, as bearers were recently reminded: this is War. This is not simply the fate of this world, but perhaps all, as it will require you to find the answer to this question. So you start to move, you start to look around, explore, and search. For the soul of each world, for the bearers that lie dreaming within, and your foes that will seek you out. Stay steadfast, for the way out will come, if you make it to the end. The longer you spend in each world, however, the more the shadows look darker, and deeper. Hungrier. The more the spaces seem smaller or compressed. As if there is something gnawing away at the sides, making their way to the heart.

Around the world in 60 seconds 12 hours
When you find yourself at the end, when you close your eyes – only a blink, but it hangs, as if the momentary motion is enough to suspend you into a suspended space before. You can see the two options stretched out before you – metaphysically – the impression of it. A long, long shadow cast over one. As if there is a presence hovering over and above, like waiting jaws, ready to strike. In the other, there remains…nothing. It is not pleasant, it is not comforting, it simply… is. A sense that there is now a lack of anything, almost like it had never existed before.

Does this world have value? You can feel the Advocate ask. Do you want to give them a chance to live? Or does should this world cease, is there nothing here to save?

And though you are compelled, required to answer, you know this question for what it is. Short-sighted. Both, in the end, will lead to its destruction, but which will you choose? Will you allow the world to continue, even with that long shadow cast, like a hungry beast with snapping jaws; or will you erase it from existence and spare it that oncoming apocalypse?

Catch [???] Winks
The last world’s fate decided, bearers float in an endless sea of stars. You can see them all, spread before you. Intermittently, they wink out, swallowed into the darkness, consumed as the shadows, that inky-black nothingness grows ever-larger. It looks upon you, bearers. It is nothing, but you have its attention, and your blood runs cold, your limbs frozen. You cannot move, you cannot speak, you cannot breathe. You feel it, the power of being drawn into it, like it wants to consume you. Like it knows you.

You gasp, as you startle awake, and open your eyes for the first time in a long time.

[ ... well if the mark of Azure Moon Dimitri isn't tearing down the enemy by sheer dumb luck. Although in this case, it's more like... tracking the enemy down? Whatever the case, the children's eyes seem to (figuratively)(?) light up with recognition, their (pasty) lil fingers pointed at Dimitri. 'That's the evil Goddess, silly! The beast that burned the land!'

By his side, a single drop of sweat trickles down Shez's temples. That is... definitely familiar, as of recent developments. ]

See? You even have evil Goddess-slaying experience under your belt! [ Haha no, that's Edelgard. ] Just let the kids be the heroes this once, rescue some damsel in distress from the dragon's clutches or something...!

[ Pay no mind to the children giving him yet another weird look, like, mister? They're not fighting to save some lady, get your facts straight?? ]

[ Huh. Weird how that works. Dimitri clears his throat, exchanging another look with Shez as he tries to puzzle this all out. The pieces are clattering around in his brain still, but... they need to make sure not to draw too much attention, right? ]

I'm sure I'd be happy to let them be as heroic as they wish.

[ The saving grace is that Dimitri genuinely is very good with kids. He turns to them with a smile. Despite how different they are, children are children, aren't they? ]

I suppose you need a monster to defeat, don't you?

[ There's a chorus of cheers. ]

[ Trust Dimitri to play the role of monster! (Just don't go feral on them, they may be slithers but they're still only kids!) ]

Guess that settles it! If this guy is gonna play the role of Goddess, then I'm gonna be extra steel! We need all the manpower we can get if we're to defeat the big evil beast once and for all, right?

[ Yes, he's joining the miniature army, it's... thematically appropriate?? Either way!! The kids's cheering grows louder as they get into battle formation, and surely enough, they're quick to demand that the "Goddess" will cast "beams of light" and "raze the land" for... full dramatic effect, one supposes? Or maybe their idea of play does include some actual training, which... actually doesn't sound too far off to a Faerghan's ears, right?

The only problem is, while these underground people are clearly skilled at offensive magic, Dimitri... probably isn't, if he's anything like the Dimitri from Shez's Fodlan. But they can't afford to blow their cover before they can get any more intel, so: ]

So, uhh. Any chance you can cast a basic fire spell...?

[ ... yes, the plan is to cast fire on the kids, look at them, they're practically beaming with anticipation...!! ]

Hmm. I... don't have any magic like that.

[ Although he desperately doesn't want to let them down, either! He just hasn't practiced any light or fire magic, which means this is going to be a bit problematic. He glances at Shez, his brow furrowed, and then at the phalanx of youngsters all eager to train - or play - with him as their villain. ]

I'm afraid my magic is more supportive rather than destructive - but i can certainly fight with a blade-!

[ he flourishes his lance, hoping that the light reflecting off of the tip will do the trick. ]

And as the vile champion of the goddess - you will have to get through me to get to her, of course!

[ Improv! Improv! ]

[ On the one hand, it's probably for the best that Dimitri isn't shooting fireballs at the kids, given a... handful of incidents Shez has witnessed or heard of. But on the other hand...

'No!' The kid at the front protests, with a stomp of their foot and a frown that might be cute if you're okay with glowy eyes. 'The champion of the evil goddess fights with swords and fists! Like the stories!' ]

Like the stories, huh...

[ He trails off, distracted for a half second. Given recent developments, he can definitely say he knows a certain goddess with a liking for punching him right int he gut... And that also reminds him of another goddess-adjacent someone who could surprisingly hold their own in a fight... Could it be just a coincidence or--

Well. He doesn't know how closely tied to the Church this Dimitri is, so it's probably best to focus on something else instead: the thought of a Blaiddyd casually throwing hands with a bunch of kids. Somehow this prospect doesn't sound any more appealing than their previous...... ]

Right, okay, so you can have this-- [ He unfastens the sword sheathed at his hip and hands it over to Dimitri. Just a loan, and his look says don't break it! ] --and I'll just fight using my cool invisible spells. Hope you're ready to be amazed!

[ Meaning! He'll just pretend to attack Dimitri, and hope the kids will follow along! It's not like they'll target Dimitri for real, right? ... right?? ]

[personal profile] hauntedking 2024-03-27 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Well...

[ Dimitri is trying to think of something he can do to help out with this when Shez comes to the rescue with a sword. He's not put two and two together quite yet, but he's still willing to play the villain. He takes the sword with a sheepish smile and turns back to the children with a nod, flourishing the blade. ]

Every good story needs a villain, certainly. Now - succumb to the Goddess' demands or face my undying wrath!

[ He has the booming voice for it, although he's really hamming it up for the kids.

Uh, yeah, hopefully no one actually attacks him.
]

Your sorcery is no match for my divine power!
sheezit: (s1)

[personal profile] sheezit 2024-03-28 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
[ And the kids surely have the booming cheers to match-- or at least they do in a small crowd!

'Destroy the child of the beast,' they command, and 'Take back what is ours!' they cry out, and that... sounds familiar? Yes, alarmingly so. But whether caught in the moment among a multitude of happy(ly murderous) little faces or spurred on by Dimitri hamming it up with no shame, Shez just can't help but join them in earnest: ]

Yeah!! Prepare to meet your end, foul child of the beast!!

[ ... oh hey, looks like he can channel his inner slither just fine. But while he mirrors the children and their swinging of arms and flickering of their stubby fingers in all pretense of readying powerful spells, Shez fails to notice that the glowing inscriptions gathering around their feet in a circle -- the source of all manner of dark magic -- is far from an act. How's that RES stat these days, Dimitri?? ]
hauntedking: (03)

[personal profile] hauntedking 2024-03-28 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
[ Dimitri doesn't notice it at first either. He's a little caught up in his playacting - but then he realizes what's going on and he falters a little. Something the kids catch on to and there's some general confusion. ]

Ah. Shez? Are you intending on-?

[ He starts to back up as he feels his hair starting to stand on end. Uh-oh. ]
sheezit: (s19)

[personal profile] sheezit 2024-04-08 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
[ It takes Shez a minute longer to even notice Dimitri has his eyes on him, promptly caught up in all the fun of play-fighting, but once he does-- ]

Huh? [ He lowers his arms, a blink in earnest confusion. ] Intending on... what?

[ Let it noted that, despite having aborted the alleged summoning, the magic circle remains on the floor, wider and brighter like it shouldn't be if Shez had been the one behind it. And if someone else is casting the spell, still, then-- ]

Wait--

[ A quick look over his shoulders and he steps aside, revealing the not at all tall and imposing figure of the youngest child in the far back, eyes glowing in all manner of playful enthusiasm that has the... unfortunate side effect of looking just a little bit evil. Another swing of their tiny little arms, and they raise it well above their head-- ]

Oh, man-- duck!

[ Or, you know, take it right to the face, he's not Dimitri's boss. Shitty RES or not, this is only child's play, can't hit that hard. Probably. ]
hauntedking: (08)

[personal profile] hauntedking 2024-04-09 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Oh dear. Look-

[ Dimitri is obviously going to try and say something to get the child to stop as they start winding up. Clearly that's the solution here. He holds out a hand with a little sound. It might be a word starting. The runes on the floor flare and then a crackling jolt of dark energy smacks him in the face and he goes down like a sack of bricks. There's a cheer from the assembled crowd of children and Dimitri groans in response.

Ow.
]
