TDM + GAME OPENING 🎉

Who: Shard-Bearers, new and old
What: Seeds take root
Where: The Tree of Life, Highstorm, Springstar
When: October 14th and onwards
Warnings: Potential for (mild) body horror, death, dismemberment

I. BEARING FRUIT (new characters only)
It starts out as a pleasant dream. You’re in your favorite place, with your favorite people. It’s a moment of idyllic comfort.

And then, it goes wrong.

The sky turns dark above, and as you look up, you see the black expanse of space spotted with faraway pinprick lights of stars. Yet, they’re not stars. You’re certain. They’re watching you. A billion eyes all looking down, and they spill forth as if sky itself was a dam holding back those dark waters. You reach back to the people you’re with, but they’re frozen in place. Their eyes are black, reflecting only the expanse of dark eyes.

So you run, even though you know you won’t escape it. You glance back and see it not overtaking, but consuming. The landscape around you is being devoured, and you can see it cracking apart. The world itself is breaking, and it cracks under your feet. You fall, and the billion eyes chase after you until the darkness swallows you whole. There’s agony as if you’re being ripped apart, and then—

You cannot see. You cannot feel. You simply are. Yet even so, impossibly, a woman’s voice speaks gently.

I’m sorry it couldn’t be saved. But, come, it’s time to wake.

You wake with a start, cradled by soft, velvety plants, and sticky with a sap that smells faintly of honey and iron. You can see the veins of the leaves that hold you, lit warmly and gently by what looks like a crystal embedded above you. Yet, it’s odd, because that crystal calls to you. When you reach out to touch it, it’s warm. Familiar. Important. You don’t know why, but you know you must hold onto this, because now it feels wrong for it to be suspended in these leaves. So, you pull it out.

The light starts to fade, but only in time to see as the leaves cradling you immediately start to soften and crumble, and with it comes a torrent of dirt. Soft, loamy soil starts to fill the space around you in the dark as you’re buried. Or, rather, you already were. You reach out through the dirt desperately, and your hands finds a root, so you pull while you clutch that precious crystal so close that it almost feels like it sinks into you (in your panic, you don’t notice that it does). You reach out again, and this time, your hand hits open air and plenty of sturdy roots around to grab.

From a seed you’re born, and like a sprout, you make your way out of the ground.

And once you’ve clawed your way out of the soft earth and the roots, nearby, you see the soil shift. Another hand comes up to grasp desperately for something, anything, just as you had been.

II. MORAL HAZARD
There are new Shard-Bearers at the Tree of Life, and Yima has asked that the earlier arrivals go to greet them and help them. These aren’t people from Horos, after all, so they’ll have many, many questions. As Yima explains, the roots of the tree rise up to create caverns underneath, and it’s there you’ll find the new Shard-Bearers. And indeed, with careful steps to not slip on the mossy roots, down you go. Perhaps Communion will help you find the new Shard-Bearers, but it might be a confusing process for them.

The roots all start to look the same, to the point that you’re sure that you’ve already been through this passage. You turn around, and most of the people you had come here with are gone, if not all of them. It’s confusing and unsettling, and strangest of all.. You’re starting to feel ill, even if that wasn’t something normally possible for you. But continuing forward, you do eventually find an unfamiliar face of a new Shard-Bearer. They look no better than you feel.

Before introductions, however, roots around you shift suddenly until you’re enclosed in a room together. From the roots, a face forms in the wall. It speaks in a creaking, uneven tone, as if it weren’t used to speaking at all.

Give to take. A sacrifice. To live.

LET'S PLAY A GAME...

As the Dryad will explain, characters are now trapped in a room and have been poisoned by the spores that the lichens underfoot release. An antidote lays beyond the roots the dryad has curled around you, but to access it, you must make a sacrifice.

Characters can pick one of the following options, but the decision must be made unanimously. If one character takes a drastic action (such as murdering another), it’s counted as a failure for the group.

  • Each of you must offer up a personal/treasured memory. The memory will be shared in Communion with all characters assembled, and then will be destroyed. No character will retain the memory or memory of its Communion.
  • Each of you must offer up something physical. A finger, a toe, an ear, it’s your choice. The dryad will offer a knife if this is chosen that will sever the body part of choice cleanly and immediately stop any bleeding.
  • Offer up another. Kill one person in the room.
  • Refusing is also a valid option. Characters will get more ill as they debate until they start to find it difficult to breathe, and they’ll die quickly after.
The following is OOC knowledge that will not be known IC: The consequences of this game are about intent, and thus are not real. When characters are freed from the tree’s thrall, they’ll have their memories/body parts/life intact.

This can be done in groups of 2 to 4 players, and Loremasters recommend three if you can swing it! It’s more fun when you get in philosophical debates, right? Regardless, when your group comes to a decision, please record it here. These don’t have to be fully threaded out to be recorded, so the conclusion can be discussed OOC if you prefer. Actions can be submitted until October 21st, after which groups will be informed of what comes of their choice

When a group receives the antidote, they'll be released from the tree's thrall... But will have a hard time waking up. It feels like something has grabbed onto their spine.

III. DREAMING OF HOME
You may wake with a start from your deliberations (or arguments) with a jolt of pain from the base of your spine as something is pulled away rapidly. A dark-haired man who looks to be in his thirties or so holds you carefully, but as soon as you start to regain your senses, he sets you back and holds up his hands.

Woah— Woah there, it’s fine! The tree was, uh, trying to take you back is all. You’re fine now.

As long as you’re not going to attack him, he offers a friendly smile and a hand to shake.

Name’s Cyrus. Sorry about the rude awakening. Let’s get your friend here unhooked too.

And indeed, glancing over, you can see the person you met in that room laying nearby, and it looks like a vine has snaked underneath them to exactly where something had just been pulled from you
Best not to think about it, maybe. Or if you've been unlucky enough to be one of the last people rescued, you might find vines and roots starting to grow into your skin. It's fine!

CYRUS, THE TRIBUNE

Cyrus is the NPC heading up the Meridian Faction, and is available to thread with under this header. Cyrus has come to the Tree of Life to help rescue the Shard-Bearer’s from the Tree, so he’s not going to be inclined to explain too much right away, since he’s on a mission, but he’ll stick around once everyone is successfully freed from Prompt 2 to speak with anyone that wants to. The following is just an OOC summary of information in case you do not need to thread with Cyrus:

Cyrus will gladly introduce himself to everyone, and will further explain his position in Meridian and Springstar (see the NPC Page) and the goals of Meridian itself (see the Faction Page, save for the italicized section). But most importantly, he’ll explain that he knows it sounds like something overly optimistic. It’s fair to be skeptical. He’ll produce a small glass bead from a bag he’s carrying. It looks like the necklace he wears, though not lit up. He’ll explain that the force of Meridian is a gift and can be a tether to your home, if you let it. As his fingertips light up, the energy is infused into the bead, which he’ll hand to you.

Taking the bead into your hands, you’ll take a bird’s eye view of your home world as if your consciousness is split, since you’ll still perceive standing in front of Cyrus at the tree. Rather than a vision, the view of your world is absolutely real, you’re certain. It’s a glimpse at the world that you thought destroyed, and if you focus on a particular place or a particular person, you’ll find the view shifting rapidly to it. No one you watch is aware of your presence, but simply continues about their daily life, whatever that is. But after about a minute, the view will fade as the light in the bead also fades.

That’s an iliachtida, a sunbeam, and when infused with Meridian’s light, allows someone Harmonized to it to check in on their world, he explains. It also acts as an anchor that tethers their soul to their world in the Timestream. With it, their world can’t entirely disappear, so eventually, they can go home. It’s a gift he’ll allow anyone that wants it to keep it, but indeed, they’ll be unable to use it again without first Harmonizing to Meridian.

To help manage threadload for the Loremasters playing Cyrus, we ask that you only tag him with the character you are most likely to app. Similarly, new tag-ins will not be accepted after Monday, October 17th.

III. SPRINGSTAR, αÎčώΜÎčÎżÏ‚ ΟλÎčÎżÏ‚
After your ordeals at the Tree of Life, perhaps you’re drawn to Springstar, the city of eternal sun and the seat of Meridian.

It’s currently (and fittingly) Spring in Springstar, and the bustling city is coming back to life after finishing up winter. It’s not as if the winters are especially harsh here, but you’ll quickly get the sense that the people of Springstar are vivacious and happy to celebrate. You’ll find the Entertainment District to be the liveliest, whether it’s at a rowdy bar or a brothel, but no matter what, you’re welcome with open arms and without question.

Of course, if you’d just like to use the chance to explore the city alongside your fellow Shard-Bearers, that’s fine too. It’s easy to get lost in the crowds of Springstar and see all the city has to offer.

IV. HIGHSTORM, Đ»ŃƒĐœŃ‹-Đ±Đ»ĐžĐ·ĐœĐ”Ń†Ń‹
Or maybe Highstorm, the city of twin moons and the seat of Zenith is more to your liking. It’s certainly the quieter of the two cities and is a relaxing, meditative place if that’s what you prefer. The chill in the air is constant, since it’s Autumn in Highstorm and the eternal night doesn’t help keep things warm, exactly. Snow isn’t out of the question at this time of the year, but it’s beautiful in the moonlight.

Because of the cooler weather than Highstorm is prone to, you’ll find many of its delights inside rather than outside. Libraries and museums are popular in the more introspective city, though it’s easy enough to find something that might please you. For example, the indoor hot baths are popular at this time of the year too. You’ll find the people are kind, if cool-tempered, though if you mention the fact that you’re a Shard-Bearer or allied with Zenith, they’re more likely to warm up.

Though much like Springstar, it may just be more interesting to explore the city with a fellow Shard-Bearer. And as a resident may warn you, it’s best to stay in the city. Wandering out into the marshes and forests isn’t advised. Of course, if you do, just contact a Loremaster to find out why. ♥

NOTES
  • Welcome to Kenos! As a reminder, all players are required to fill out an application, which are now open. This does include characters/players from Aion Teleos, so please don’t forget to fill one out! Any character/player that does not submit an application will be swept from the communities and the Discord after applications close.
  • Activity Check is optional this month, but is highly recommend so Christy can check her fancy program so that you can earn Activity Reward Tokens! Activity will be able to be submitted shortly after applications close. You can find more about how we do AC here.
  • This log is Game Canon. Any characters who are not apped to the game will disappear. If Cyrus or Yima are asked, they’ll explain that this happens sometimes, since not every soul has a strong tether to Kenos and sometimes return to the Timestream. They’re fine and may even return to Kenos one day, but for now weren’t able to make the full journey.
  • As a reminder, your character has a Shard somewhere on their body that encompasses their soul, so keep note of where you're sticking it on their person for reference! Additionally, they have a tattoo of their Aspect somewhere on their body. Please be mindful this Aspect will be assigned to you upon approval and whatever you choose for the TDM may be temporary (for new characters)!
  • For the Highstorm and Springstar prompts, both cities will be fully open and accessible to all characters once they are saved from their rather harrowing ordeal at the Tree of Life. For prompt ideas and any general information about the cities and what you can find there, please see the Navigation page and check out the locations!

    FOR NEW PLAYERS:

  • New players are welcome to join our Discord Server if you haven't already!
  • When they emerge from their cocoon/the ground, characters may be wearing their normal clothes, or they might be nude. Up to you!
  • At some point in the days after leaving the Tree of Life, new Shard-Bearers will have a dream, even if they're usually not capable of sleeping. All new players should read this post, since this details how they'll learn about both factions and their goals and should help them make a decision in which Faction they'd be drawn to.
  • New characters will not have access to any canon abilities on the TDM.
  • Your character will be offered temporary housing either at the Heliopolis district or Yima's manor for the first few weeks after their arrival. They will also be given a stipend for basic supplies like clothing and personal effects, and food is served in the cantina (Heliopolis) and at regular meal times in the Dining Room (Yima's manor). Once they Harmonize, they will get personal permanent chambers and a fancy retainer in their Faction's city. Wow! 🌈

    FOR OLD PLAYERS:

  • Characters may be Harmonized to their Faction (if that makes sense for the character, of course!) by the time of this log. This is more for IC reference, and just wait until application acceptance to do the OOC paperwork!
  • General reminder that your character won't have access to their powers until they have Harmonized.

And just like that, the young wizard is out of sight.

Emet-Selch looks to the door delightedly before stealing a glance to Hythlodaeus. "Well, I daresay that you made an impression he shan't soon forget." He says with stifled laughter in his tone. An impression indeed!

He'll have to make sure to ask Hythlodaeus about what went on unseen between them at another time. For now, he stands and finally uses a hand to try and tame his hair.

"Come. Perhaps that is a sign that we should get some fresh air." Some lunch perhaps. Though he'll need to get dressed on his own before that happens.

Lovely. It may sound a bit odd from me, but I always thought it something of a shame that the cities of the past were either not built to last or were built over. Any cities from what I would call an age ago

[ He breathes out a single laugh, and shakes his head ]

Well, there would be pieces remaining, perhaps, but their history is forgotten. So, your Oppara sounds like a place I would enjoy visiting.

[ Not that Liem may want that in return, considering, you know, demon. But. At least with his cheerful demeanor as he talks, it seems like it would be just for the appreciation of it. ]

I would not say “a lot”, necessarily, but a fair amount. It varies widely. I cannot come to the mortal realm unless I am invited. Well, generally speaking, at least. [ He gives a small shrug as he gives an idle glance around, so, clearly Kenos (and Horos) are the exception. ] I am usually not present very long. A few months is fairly typical. By that measure, it is perhaps best to call me a not infrequent tourist instead.

"It sounds twisted, certainly. That one would harm his fellows in such a way is... troubling."

Hythlodaeus may be a mischief maker but he would never hurt anyone, not intentionally. So the idea of doing it for profit- which is another concept he's not too familiar with- irks him.

"I do hope that kind of thing doesn't happen here."

[ He does tense when Hayame approaches the table, the thud of her hooves sending tiny tremors through the flooring. Not because he's about to start any shit, but because he can't fully discount the possibility of Hayame, say, flipping the table right up into his face. Or just, like breaking a bowl over his head or something. Who knows what to expect from a barbaric-ass centaur who'd been willing to shoot before talking?

But she simply sits at the table across from him.

    Picks up her chopsticks.

And even seems to say (silent) thanks before starting to eat. Normally.

He'd kept his gaze trained warily at the food, only watching Hayame out of the fringes of his field of vision, but Gen does look up once Hayame starts digging in. He's already making good progress on his own second serving of saury, and he slowly chews at a large mouthful as he studies her for a long moment. Given his missing left hand he's been forced to tweak his eating habits, unable to hold his rice bowl up, and he awkwardly keeps his chopsticks balanced across the lip of his bowl of miso soup as he lifts it up to take a big sip.

    Then -- ]

So you're capable of at least pretending to be normal sometimes. [ It's a low mutter, partially muffled into his bowl, punctuated by the soft thunk as Gen places it back onto the table. His chopsticks click neatly as he picks off another big chunk of the saury to pop into his mouth, and he speaks while still chewing: ] Was wondering if you were just always a psycho bitch.

[ Despite his unsavory word choice, his delivery is low and almost mild, tired rather than incendiary. There's a pause as Gen picks at his saury for a moment longer before adding plainly, ]

If you're still that determined to kill me, save it for next time. S'been way too long since I got to have some normal food -- and looks like it's the same for you, too. Don't go fucking it up.

[Howl's answer might seem to some degree like equivocation, but Liem thinks he understands what he means. Being able to trust someone unreservedly, to believe wholly in their judgement, is a rare thing. He can't judge the wizard for being reluctant to profess that level of faith, and indeed, if he did after only three months, it would probably cheapen his loyalty in Liem's eyes.

He wraps his fingers around his half-drained cup, glancing briefly at the waitress as she hurries past.
    ]

    How so?

[Liem's brows raise slightly; for all their power, the Regent had never displayed any hint of truly being able to remake the universe. If such power was really within Yima's grasp, that was a potent thing to consider.]

She has been very kind, but kindness is not the same as wisdom, or ability.

Hm. So still quite young, then.

[Hythlodaeus does understand that most people here are not as old as he is. Silco is an adult and he will treat him as one, but that doesn't mean he's not extremely short-lived by Hythlodaeus' standards.]

I see, I see. I cannot say it has ever occurred to me to look into such things, I'll admit. I often kept to my own circles, and that was that.

[He spoke with many people back home, sure, but he was usually hanging around Emet-Selch if they weren't working. And Azem, when the man wasn't on his travels. One could say that Hythlodaeus was already well connected to the "powerful" of his own world, being best friends with two Convocation members and having been offered a seat of his own once upon a time, but he never thought about it that way.]

Hythlodaeus frowns a little, but doesn't ask for more details on the Kenoma for now. Instead he focuses on the latter part of Sebastian's statement.

"It must be disorienting to find yourself in a new world not once, but twice. I suppose you were well-equipped to deal with it the second time around, however?"

He steeples his fingers before him, eyes focused intently on his companion.

"You travelled between two worlds at home, too? Goodness me. What was your area of expertise?"

Emet-Selch nods slowly and stands back up as straight as he cares to. Ah, the overly attentive type. One that would be a reasonable balance to Cyrus' seemingly flighty personality.

"A supportive friend who sees to it that you complete all the tasks required." He gives the faintest dramatic sigh. "What a lovely answer, but it certainly makes for boring gossip."

"Pink-haired Kaeya?" Is a Kaeya some kind of insult? He tilts his head before shrugging. Well, even if it is, he can't say he's particularly offended since he doesn't know what it is.

"I am Hythlodaeus. And who might you be?"

Similarly, he wants to know who she is so that he can file her under people who are new to this world. He thinks it's a good idea to stick together.

[Hythlodaeus smiles to Dextera before Amos moves to bring his hands to the man's throat. His smile immediately fades, and he wonders if he should be watching or not. He doesn't want to, but why should he get to simply look away and pretend it isn't happening when Dextera has to suffer?

In the end, his eyes only drop when he's sure the life has left Dextera. And though he's seen bodies before, plenty of them in fact, he's never been almost directly responsible for them. He swallows hard, before speaking. Though he looks unnerved, his voice is steady.]

I trust you will keep his shard safe.

[He looks to the Archangel with a tiny smile, though it seems somewhat forced given their situation. He has noticed the poison seems to be clearing, too- he can breathe easier, and he sighs in quiet relief.]

'Tis what he wanted, after all. And when he comes back, we can thank him properly.

[They simply didn't have time for more than a few brief words here.]

"Oh? Who was it?" He has a feeling that perhaps he knows who it was- reading Emet-Selch has always been easy for him, and the way his gaze lingers on him speaks volumes. But he asks anyway, because some part of him wants to hear it.

Though he soon gets distracted with the prospect of factions. He thinks on it, before coming up with an idea.

"And if I joined up with Meridian? That way we have a man on either side, and we can discuss the intricacies of each faction together and make a more informed decision."

“Perhaps less so if it had not happened so rapidly,” he admits with a laugh in his voice, “Of Horos, I can tell you precious little, I am afraid, for I only resided there for a month before that journey was summarily finished.”

Sebastian pauses to take another drink of his coffee, if only because it seems like the appropriate tie to do so. The question itself is a fair one, and one he already knows his answer for, but it still amounts to a joke. He may not be keeping the truth of his existence all that secret, but
He also can’t resist a play on words.

“I would not know if it counts as an area of expertise, but I did contract work.” Technically true. It’s just an answer with a bit of his whimsy behind it. “I am more of a jack of all trades, master of none. Whatever I am paid to do, I shall do with excellence, if will forgive my brief impertinence to say it so. It drew me between my realm and that of mortals whenever they saw cause to call upon me.”

Vander crosses his arms over his chest, very casual, and steers his attention back to the table as if he too suddenly had a renewed interest in perusing the items on display. Give Atsumu some room to wrestle with those thoughts without feeling scrutinized.]

Can’t help but feel like it’s all a bit daunting, myself. Getting swept away to this place, that is. [The words are light and easy, and the barest hint of a wry smile tugs at his lips.] You know what they say about old dogs and new tricks.

Indeed, home is home. Nothing will ever quite compare.

[He wishes he could see Amaurot one last time. Not through a bead, like the one Cyrus gave him, but with his own eyes as he wandered the streets. Alas, the city is lost to time, and though he knows of Emet-Selch's recreation he doesn't think he would want to see it so devoid of life.]

Shang Tsung simply smiles thinly at her reaction to his praise. She raises a point he had already considered "Yes, a matter I shall have to investigate more thoroughly." He replies. "Alchemy has long since been a favoured subject of mine." Meaning that like Jinx, this is a guy who knows his way around chemical compounds.

He cocks his head to one side in mild amusement as she regards him, clapping his hands and rubbing them together. "Well, I would hate to miss something so exciting." He steps towards the edge of the building looking down, still keeping a few feet between him and Jinx. An amused chuckle escapes his lips as he regards the chaos below.

"Marvelous. Simply marvelous." He turns to loo back at Jinx. "The work of an artist, my dear. Congratulations."

Hythlodaeus watches Howl go, intrigued by the way the man's flesh had seemed to turn to stone under his hand- but then he falls about laughing as soon as he's out of sight.

"Goodness..." He's never had that effect on someone before, at least not to his knowledge, so he's both flattered and amused at the same time. Chuckling still, he looks back to Emet-Selch with pink cheeks from laughing.

"Perhaps it was terribly unkind of me to approach him in such a way, but I couldn't resist." He straightens, composing himself somewhat.

"I would like that. I shall wait here for you."

"You have a point." Shang Tsung concedes, stroking his beard in thought. "It's such a terrible thought to grapple with." He muses, staring past Caitlyn at some indeterminate point. "The end of...everything. All Realms, save this one. To have lived so long and be one of the last people still remaining." He shakes his head, apparently weighed down by the realization.

"Do you think it's true, what they say?" He asks finally, looking up at her. "That this world is truly all that is left?"

[Vander takes the offered hand in a strong, sturdy grip and flashes him a smile.] Name’s Vander. Good to meet you, Sebastian.

[What an odd sight the two of them must make with their clash of styles, one man polite and proper and the other rough around the edges. Or at least, that’s how it would have seemed back home. With as much of a mish-mash of people and cultures as there is making up these floating cities, perhaps it’s not so outlandish around here. Much to adjust to.]

Never would have thought I’d wake up one day and be chatting up folks from whole different worlds in a cozy little market like this. [He grins, finding good-natured amusement in the idea.] You been around these parts for long?

Shang Tsung merely continues to smile at that. Do not be so sure about that. He thinks. The name "Horos" means nothing, but faces, well...Shang Tsung's had plenty of those over the years. Plenty of faces, taken from plenty of people.

He's going to need to find some more.

"No, but I am aware of how often history can be twisted to serve other purposes." He replies affably, nodding at Silco's admission of a joke. "Then I am pleased to hear they will be of use." He falls silent, and strokes his beard thoughtfully. Something stuck out there. The last world, Silco said. Not his world. Just the last.

"My pardon, but...You have traveled between more than one Realm?" It was Shang's impression most people had been brought here directly from their own worlds before whatever calamity had supposedly befallen them. Silco's words imply he had a stop-over between his own, and here. Shang himself is no stranger to Realm travel, but...well, frankly, Silco doesn't look like the type. Curious. "Do you mean this "Horos" place you spoke of?"

I suppose you can't starve out the other side without shooting your own foot, hm?

[ It's an interesting prospect. Silco knows how it is, to be somewhat dependent on those one considered their enemies. There's something that they don't have in Zaun, and that's ample verdant land. There's nothing to farm, and while they could live off of trade from Bilgewater, some of the castaways are thrown off from topside.

There seems to be a natural symbiosis to Springstar and Highstorm, and it's not something he's unused to. It's also different, than what he'd seen in the last world, where the breadbasket had been... relatively subjugated. This didn't even have a set population, it seemed. He assumed the buildings remained, but...
    ]

Curious, though, that they seem drawn to shard-bearers, hm? I assume she gave you no indication as to what that was about? [ Was it their natural power? Were they predators, knowing that they were encroaching on this world? Silco had seen enough that he has multiple theories now, but without investigating... ]

I wonder what they hope to gain, by attacking ones like us? There must be < em>something that draws them in.

[ How stupid he had been to act like everything was fine, only for a tipping point to come as fast and easily as this one. He'd only wanted to remove himself from the equation to lessen what he is, what he's done. How could they do this for him? How do they not... hate him as much as he hates himself? If only they would. It would make it easier to understand.

But nearly twenty-two thousand years of solitude erodes the mind, and while Dokja had been kept from insanity thanks to the Fourth Wall back then, he doesn't have anything as convenient here.

So he trembles, fingers curling in his hair, his eyes still shut while he shakes his head. Why for him... Why for him are they so willing to risk everything when all he's ever done is take and take and take? Guilt consumes him, becomes him, and he can't stop seeing the faces of those he'd left behind. Even worse is the conflict in his heart. How dare he think to feel even the slightest bit touched by their desire to save him when he's caused unspeakable horrors for every single one of them? It's the hope that hurts most of all when the knowledge that he can't be saved is what he's always known.

He can't speak in the midst of his panic, only draws in ragged breaths as he struggles to calm himself down. ]

[ It's always a small delight whenever he encounters someone so honest. This man looks like the type to wear his heart on his sleeve, so Kaeya doesn't mind listening to his words and what he has to say. He sips at his drink quietly. ]

You wouldn't be alone in that.

[ His eyes scan the whole bar. Many of them have been taken away from their worlds too, right? They're all in the same boat. ]

This is the second time it's happened to me— although I wouldn't call the last place I was in as 'home'. [ Horos was far from it. ] Not that it gets any easier, of course.

[ He doubts it ever will. ]

    What was your city like?

[ It at least doesn’t seem to be anything Sebastian has any hesitation over. His own grip for the handshake is firm and confident in return, if not as strong, though that might be expected considering their differences in build. ]

    Oh, indeed, nor would I!

[ His response is warm and cheerful, and as they’ve both set down their respective trinkets, he gives a small gesture to the larger market as an unsaid way of asking if Vander would like to join him while they chat. There is a practiced nature to his motions, both very rigid and practiced, but as fluid as a dancer’s that definitely gives the impression of someone that at least works closely to highborn people, though likely not so himself. ]

I awoke in Lady Yima’s estate but a week or so ago, I must admit. Why, this particular adventure was a way to learn a bit more about Highstorm, in fact.

[ He gives a light nod to Vander in response, since just that question technically answers his own, but it’s a bit more interesting to hear Vander’s explanation for it. He hasn’t had much opportunity to talk to the truly new Shard-Bearers yet, and it sounds like they went through quite a process. ]

I take it you awoke in the Tree’s roots yourself?

Shang Tsung's been in plenty of fights, and all of them, except for the flawless ones, had left their marks upon him, greater or lesser. But with the right medicine, well...all wounds could be healed so well it would look they'd never happened at all.

"I know the feeling." Shang replies, finishing with his bracer. He considers her question. "I have fought beasts before." He says, ruminating. "They are...hm, not challenging to a veteran. They are creatures of instinct only, and instinct is easy to counter by a smart opponent." He looks at her, appraisingly.

"I have always found opponents who can think on their feet more challenging. More...satisfying. Don't you agree?"

    I asked you, first!

[ Sadly, he's not the type to gracefully accept something turned around on him; ungracefully, he half-rises from the waters, pointing rudely in Matsui's direction. It's accusatory, his wrist shaking from muted pain and collarbone still relatively misshapen from earlier combat. The waters help, the drink helps, but he still has a ways to go before he is truly on the mend.

Still, it speaks to his sheer stubbornness that he gestures so rudely back at the placid individual sharing the space with him. ]

Well, start thinking of your own answer! I didn't ask you for you to turn it around on me, I'm the one looking for other perspectives here!
