I apologize for the huge spoiler-laden loredump you're about to get

Mm, well, you'll have to forgive me for the sparse explanation. Though I've come to see Eorzea as my home, the nuance their religion still largely escapes me. Garleans are atheistic, so I've no frame of reference.

The Twelve, as they are called, are said to have created the land of Eorzea. That would be the continent of Aldenard and its nearby islands, the largest of which is Vylbrand. When the wandering tribes first arrived in the land, it's said they took to the heavens, content to let man rule the land.

[He shakes his head.]

As I said... the reality is quite different, and includes far more than just Eorzea.

As I've been told, this is the truth: before the First Astral Era, some twelve thousand years ago, the star encountered a great threat. Desperate for a solution, half the population gave their lives to create enough aether to create the first Primal: a being named Zodiark, meant to become the will of the star and protect it from further harm. But the result left the land nearly dead. Half of those who survived gave their lives to bring life anew.

Some thought it was still not enough, and that is where a second faction emerged. This group thought there had been enough bloodshed, and had the most radical of solutions: weakening man's power, and creating a prison for Zodiark, the moon, so that His aether could protect the star, while also being unable to demand more sacrifices.

A second Primal was created, Hydaelyn, and Her solution was to shatter the world into fourteen pieces. The Source, and its thirteen reflections. She would go on to become the will of the star in Zodiark's place, and in time the star became known as Hydaelyn because of Her.

The people of the star, myself included, were entirely ignorant of Zodiark's existence until He was murdered by a fanatic named Fandaniel, who wished to bring about the end of all life.

[That's a lot to process, he knows.]

Even Garleans wouldn't deny Hydaelyn's existence, but She's gone now, too. I don't know the details, just that She perished so the threat could be extinguished for good.
