He had been curious, of course, but he had also never asked because he had felt Matsui would elaborate at this own pace. He had seemed rather hesitant in their first meeting, after all, but it had been adamantly clear from his mannerisms that Matsui wasn’t human. For Sebastian, that was understanding enough.

It’s something he’s explained to a few people in Kenos, though the framing tends to differ from person to person depending on how Sebastian postures himself with them. It’s a fundamental part of humanity that caught his interest so, and thus it could be expressed in many shades. Here, it’s easy to stick with the more detached and distant perspective of an observer. ]

I find it to be the natural result of their mortality. They are incredibly fragile things, at least compared to most, having but a few decades of life if they are lucky. Yet, despite that, it is rare that they feel the weight of such a short period of time. It is tragic for that. But also rather lovely.
