Alice is clearly someone with conviction; someone who has the strength to fight for what she believes in, and that can count for a lot, on top of what else she may be hiding. (He had a friend, before his universe had died; taller than Alice, but ill, and in the right circumstance she could kick his own ass, easily.)
On the other hand... this needs to get done. He doesn't feel bad anymore, because it needs to be done. Maybe he'll feel bad after, maybe he won't; for now he can't afford to feel anything, so he doesn't.
