wolfish: (regard)

It's far easier to convince otherwise decent people to fight an enemy when they're combative instead of kind.

[ Whatever Yuri may have thought of Cyrus' approach, aspects of how the man conducted himself echoed his young king. That was something that prompted both concern and a measure of respect. Yuri admires Dimitri's willingness to give others every opportunity to turn back, to prove themselves better, to spare lives that might otherwise be needlessly snuffed out.

Yet the reward for this, in Cyrus' case, is the same that Yuri dreads for Dimitri. An enemy can make a much better case for fighting their foe if they're not so concerned with being conducting themselves in an upright manner. There's more to it, of course. Killing such a leader allows for claiming they were weak, wrong, or both. All these things serve Yima, for even though Meridian retaliating is just, that witch could now paint them as savage foes to defeat.

It's so much easier to achieve after such provocation, and she must know full well that Meridian can't lie down and do nothing in the face of that. The pity is they didn't know until it was too late.

But all this Yuri expects that Hayame has already considered, minus comparisons to certain rulers. The conversation shifts and Yuri straightens, standing at his proper full height, still dwarfed by Hayame's stature. He hasn't forgotten their exchange, though pet is a funny way of putting it. ]

Agreed, they clearly have cornerstones we've left unturned.

[ He touches on this first, a confirmation that he knows there's work to be done and he intends to help, before moving on. ]

I recall we spoke of Gavial. [ Indeed, he vouched for her, and he can't imagine she would target civilians. He doesn't know what Hayame saw, however. ] Who else am I answering for?

[ The question is void of his usual casual air, bearing none of the flippancy that it might were this not a conversation with someone he respects. But this is Hayame, and he does, and what happened to this city is a grave matter. If he's misplaced his faith in others' natures, then he should know and acknowledge that failing. Coming from his background, he should know better.

He thought he did. ]
