[Birds sure did love perching on him, if only because he kept a pocket full of nuts and seeds to feed to them. His compulsion to feed small animals, be they cats, dogs or birds... it was overpowering]

I wouldn't say enthusiast, but I've observed them often whenever I'm out and about. If you're able to identify them, it can help you learn more about your surroundings.

[If a kingfisher was nearby, then likely there was a river. A heron, and there was some sort of body of water, or an agricultural field, as they were drawn to freshly cut crops. Blackbirds? Some sort of forested area.]
