The best way of dealing with his misery was not to pay any attention to it. No one else ever did. He sure wasn't expecting Hayame, of all people, to be the one to bring it up, even if she's very clearly not inquiring after his mental health. Briefly, he looks a little surprised; then his expression hardens again as he tries to suppress the bitter hopelessness he feels surging up again.

He's not sure what she wants to hear, and he's not sure what he should say, either - he's always been bad at that stuff - so he just answers honestly. ]

Feels like the whole goddamn world's out to make me miserable. I probably deserve it. But you know what? I'm still alive anyway. And I'm tired of suffering... So if I gotta force the world to let me be happy, too, I'll do it.
