Though he moves on from it easily enough, as the familiar is staying put on his shoulder. "The most useful of abilities when it comes to familiars is that I can telepathically communicate with it so long as it's within one hundred fulms of me."

Given the unfamiliar terminology, it might not be entirely clear what he's talking about, but it's probably reasonable to assume it's not a great distance. "I also have the ability to see through its eyes, but I haven't had a reason to use that particular skill yet."

In other words, there's not a great deal it can do on its own, but what it can is incredibly useful in the right circumstances.
