Because while he knew Jeralt, there was another parent whose face he didn't know, whose voice he had never heard, and who Jeralt barely spoke about out of grief, but whose sacrifice had ensured he lived and continued to live when he otherwise would've died before he even drew breath. The Crest Stone that functioned as his heart had been his mother's heart before, and she had willingly pulled it from her chest and given it to him, a fervent wish for him to live, even if she never got to see it come to pass.

It was a different kind of love to have, he supposed. A love for someone you had never met, but who you wished you did.]


But I think you can miss something you don't know... at least, you can feel grief that the opportunity to know them was lost.
