Although he's starting to feel very hopeless about all of this, the other man's words seem to have reached him. He's right — there has to be some purpose in their coming to this place, hasn't there? And while all signs certainly point to the Tree being dead... they need to, have to, operate on the assumption that it isn't beyond saving. Because if it is, then they really are doomed, and all of this is pointless.
