Great question! As a lore holdover from the bad place, Shard-Bearers technically don't need to eat or drink to survive. However, they do still get the unpleasant physical sensation associated with not eating, and not drinking to a much lesser amount! So, they won't die while they're down in the tree, but they'll be very uncomfortable. Hangry, even!

However, the Shard-Bearers will find that they can relieve the symptoms by scratching at the bark of the tree. It's edible, but only like... Technically. It doesn't have much of a taste and the texture is, well, eating bark, but it'll stave off hunger symptoms. They'll find similar effects from digging a little deeper into the tree to draw out what remains of its sap to drink.
