The Seeds of Unrest: the Iconoclast Oracle

RUNNING OUT THE CLOCK
The situation is bleak.

The Blight - and the massive labyrinth of roots tearing both cities asunder, spreading deadly flowers wherever they penetrate - have progressed to a point beyond catastrophe. People are dying in rapid numbers. Bearers are having difficulty keeping up with the spread of infection - even among one another. The collapse of Kenos seems inevitable; a cure will not come in time. You can do nothing but watch as each new day brings further disaster, ticking down the seconds until it all falls apart.

And then, you feel something seize your Shard. As if physical fingers have wrapped around it, as if it is being clutched through you by invisible hands, you feel invaded. You feel wronged. But before you can panic, a voice enters your mind through Communion.

Excuse the dramatics, but there isn’t much time for pleasantries. The Trees are about to hit the point of no return. But there's still work to be done. The Tree of Life will take you where you can find it: the Oracle and the creature causing all this mess. Fix this when you find them. However you'd like.

Have you heard Aetos’ voice before? Perhaps it is the first time; perhaps it is familiar to you. Either way, the last thing you will remember is a confusing jumble: a spell of immense and incredible power, one utilizing the Tree’s strength to shelter you. The sensation of every cell in your body coming alive, yet seeming to break apart and render you into billions and billions of tiny pieces, all hovering in different times and places across all the different iterations, timelines, and realities in which you have ever existed. A voice that speaks not through words asking your forgiveness, unspeakably sad.

And then, there is nothing.

AWAKENING
Your eyes open, gritty with the feeling of a long, deep slumber.

Perhaps it takes a moment to shake off the heavy veil of exhaustion, to recollect what you were doing before you fell into this state of hibernation - but as soon as you do, you feel an immediate sense of foreboding around you. It is thick in the air, oppressive and pervasive, and you aren’t left long to wonder at its source. You lay beneath the branches of the Tree of Life, but as your bleary eyes focus… you see it. The Tree is all but bereft of life. Its bark has withered down to gnarled wood, the soft lichen dried up, and the grass that should be alive beneath you is long dead and gone. There is not so much as a single leaf on its decaying branches.

It has been this way for a long, long time... you realize this with a feeling of intense dread as you see it - the beautiful expanse of stars, of the cosmos, of universes scattered like starlight above the tree's boughs, gone. In its place hangs a sickly, ominously low-hanging, and dying sun ready to sing the end of everything.

You can't help but wonder how long Kenos has been in this state, but a sense of gratitude fills you as you realize that the Tree expended the last of its energies to protect you, the Bearers, during your state of rest. Had Aetos worked with the tree to see you sent here?

The next question comes quickly: how much time do you have left…? And can you find the Oracle before that time expires?

ABANDON HOPE (DAYS 1 & 2)
The cornerstones are still active and will take you to whichever city you wish to see.

Highstorm and Springstar sit like empty monuments to the cities that were once filled with life - yet the first thing you will notice is they are strangely absent the signs of the Tree’s overgrown roots, the Blight, the catastrophic damage that you can recall all too easily. Instead, each city sits as those they were summarily abandoned overnight, leaving nothing but their shells behind. There is a stillness in the air that is unnatural and unsettling. Despite the lack of any sign of the citizens of either city, you cannot help but feel… watched.

Something terrible happened here. Best you find the Oracle before something terrible finds you, instead.

The burning of a dying sun beats down on you wherever you go, unbearable heat sending waves off the aged cobblestone streets. Perhaps it is your instinct to seek refuge in the shade - but linger too long about the shadows and that feeling of eyes on your back, of being unable to breathe, of your world closing in around you will grow untenable and drive you back into the light. If you hope to explore the ghostly shell of your city in search of the Oracle - or to sate your curiosity, some problem-solving might be in order.

And while you acclimate yourself to your circumstances, you cannot help but note you feel wrong inside, somehow…

EXPLORATION

  • If your characters choose to explore previously unreachable areas, please use THIS TOPLEVEL to report when they get there in the thread! We will get back to you with what is discoverable in that location.
  • The following areas are off limits for exploration: below Yima’s Manor; below the Church of Heliopolis; Alenroux; Kowloon.
  • The Great Trees of both Highstorm and Springstar are in a similar state to the Tree of Life and will not respond to Communion.
  • Generally speaking, items will be of poor quality. Most will look as though they’ve aged thousands of years. Others will be in half-decent shape, but sparingly so. Oddly enough, it doesn’t seem like the whole city has aged at the same rate, so especially diligent rummagers can find worthwhile supplies. Please consider this should be rare and don’t go overboard!

NOTES

Here are some prompt reminders - see the full thing at the OOC Summary!
  • Characters will have a diluted connection to the Zenith or Meridian.
  • There will be periods powers are weakened or non-functional during days 1-2 (up to player discretion).
  • The sunlight results in scorching; the shadows cause claustrophobia and fear while outdoors.
THE RITUAL (DAYS 2+)
The place you started your journey to Kenos is also where it seems it will end. As soon as the first Bearer makes contact with the Iconoclast effigy, you are collectively drawn to the roots beneath the Tree - like a pang sent through your Shard. Your objective has been found. The Oracle awaits.

Trusting Aetos seems like a fool's errand, but you must put your hope in the Tree. What choice do you have left? It's time to find what lies at the end of this.

Bearers descend, your steps echoing in the dark, cavernous space. Once brimming with life and vitality, the roots are now dried and brittle like the bones of some ancient leviathan that died long ago. As you make their way deeper into the earth, the deadened roots twist, leading you to a vast chamber deep within it; the air here is thick with the smell of decay, and the faint glow of luminescent fungi and mosses barely illuminates the space.

To your left, the Bearers will notice what has drawn them here - and the object of their search.

An effigy sits on the ground between two darkened tunnels. The effigy is made of gnarled, dead branches woven together in a humanoid shape; its hollow, empty eyes are sightless, yet you cannot help but feel it is watching your every move. Branded on its forehead is the Iconoclast symbol carved into the rough wood.

Once all Bearers are present, the Ritual will begin. Your means of exit have been sealed off, and you are trapped, slowly deteriorating together…

NOTES

  • Bearers will have access to the Ritual Chamber which is a very wide, open space with the effigy situated against the far wall from the entrance. Several smaller tunnels off-shoot from the Ritual Chamber. They all run to dead ends; some are very small or narrow. This may afford you meager privacy away from the group.
  • Once a Bearer steps into the Chamber, they can no longer head back out the way they came. They’ll find themselves automatically walking back into the Chamber as if of their own volition.
  • For brevity’s sake we won’t list them out again here, but the complete description of effects Bearers will experience days 2+ is available in the OOC Summary.
  • The effigy is impervious to damage.
  • It Is Watching You.
  • In a dead-end root tunnel attached to the Iconoclast’s Chamber is the Blighted statue of an Otter that may be familiar to some… Please see THIS TOPLEVEL for more information!
THE PURGE (DAYS 5+)
The sap has festered in your veins for what feels like days. It’s impossible to tell how much time has passed; this place has no sunlight. The effigy watches as you remain trapped, huddled together around it, unable to leave as you find yourself sick with the affliction of the Meridian, Zenith - or both.

And then… something finally gives.

Though it does not move and speaks no words, you feel the effigy offering you guidance. Knowledge. Much like the Tree speaks to you in impressions and feelings, you are conveyed wisdom you did not have before: a way to take what you want and rid yourself of what you do not. A way to make your convictions known to all who would hear them. A way to be known. To write your path in blood, be it yours… or theirs.

When all is said and done, only one force - Zenith or Meridian - will gain its favor.

Show it who you are. Show it what resolve looks like to you - and what you are willing to do to attain it.

NOTES

Here are some prompt reminders - see the full thing at the OOC Summary!
  • You can Purge your alignment through various methods: Trading, Corrupting, or using the Effigy itself.
  • All characters will understand the end goal is for everyone to Harmonize; the alignment with the higher rate of Harmonized Bearers alive when time’s up wins the Oracle’s favor.
NOTES
  • A reminder that the Harmonization tally will take place on Friday, the 19th and be open through Monday, the 29th. The results will be released on Wednesday, the 31st OOCly.
  • Don’t forget to submit any deaths to the Death Tracker, with a gentle reminder characters will remain dead until the event conclusion!
  • Reminder to fill out the SETTING POLL ASAP if you haven't already!
  • Have some MUSIC if you'd like. LYRICS here!
  • HAVE FUN!!

[—Oh. The calling of her name snaps Rin out of it pretty quick. Tohsaka's hands release, and her expression falls away from its severe twist.]

Ah, sorry. I suppose our connection when it happened made me a little more sensitive to being frustrated about it.

Oh... I should be more careful about how I feel, then.

[ And indeed, she can feel Rin's anger loosening from the air between them. How tricky. After a second of visible thought, Gray attempts to broadcast a soothing vibe at Rin to smooth over the bump of emotion. ]

[No.

Tohsaka flattens out her hand and bonks her gently with the side of her palm. The most careful of karate chops.]

Don't be ridiculous. It's not about being sensitive to your feelings in this moment. We were connected when it happened, remember? Your death was nearly like my own. It's a bit personal.

To return to battle.

[ She can't see Hayame resting her bow for long, and those who were raised in warfare rarely know anything outside of that life. Rosaria isn't all that different herself, still at times embodying the mentality of a survivor on the brink of death, stealing, looting, and killing just to earn herself another day. Not even the dissolution of her own world had changed the cloying desperation to keep on living, in spite of having lost nearly everything already.

Her eyes flit down to the shard gripped between her fingers, brimming with the essence of all they are and will ever be, so fragile and easy to crush. Death would come swiftly, but she would not betray the trust of one she's come to view as like-minded enough to qualify as a companion. Of sorts. How long that feeling will continue to last she can't predict, but today, her only intent is to go home and get some sleep. Not start any wars herself.

She eventually holds out the shard to make another exchange. ]

Unfortunately, this isn't an enemy that can be taken out with either spear or arrows. What then?

[ Ah. The gentlest of bonks elicits the gentlest of surprised noises from Gray. ]

That's right...

[ As shameful as it is to admit, she completely forgot that Rin would've been able to feel the explicit misery of her death when it happened. A floodgate opens, letting loose a deluge of guilt and embarrassment at Rin. Gray's hood flops forward as she bows in apology. ]

I'm so sorry. That's an awful thing to have to feel.

[Immediately Rin grabs Gray's shoulders and shoves the other girl into an upright sitting position.]

Don't apologize! You're the one who actually died, didn't you?! It's the person who killed you who is at fault. Don't you dare apologize for someone else's mistake!

[ Silco caught the vision with deft hands, and looked it over. Some things he an pick up, such as the symbol that matched the soldiers, though that is not surprising, that Childe would have something that reflects on them, given that he was a part of their group as well, though he doesn't have much knowledge of the rest of it. He doesn't know that there's a Delusion here, but he does understand that the two sides are different, and as Childe explains, his fingers brush against the features, as he looked it over.

Inert though it was here, under these roots, he still tips it this way, and that, listening. It's a lot more details than he expected from Childe, but his eyes even flick up to him, when he mentioned that Kaeya's Vision was from the same... "goddess" that is trying to bring forth the Delusions.

That she wants to equalize between the chosen and those that wish to find power... hm. Gods and Goddesses in his very limited experience do not do such things, and magic and technology are so often only given to those who can afford it. Even in Zaun, where their leaps in technology are the envy of even their betters in some ways -- their replacement limbs are like nothing any other city can boast (though given how often people lose limbs in the mines, in fights, or to disease, it's not surprising) but those are limited by funds too. One had to have enough money, enough power, enough people willing to do favors to get them there. No world is different, as much as others like to say that their worlds are better. Power, and money, speak louder than anything else. He's certain that this doctor would be doing this for a reason, just as he and Singed had developed Shimmer for a reason.
]

Hm, where I am from, we have had to create more... rudimentary tactics, to bring power to the powerless.

[ Zaunite children didn't dream of adventure, they dreamed of having a warm bed, and food on the table. ]

Though I can understand the motivation to do so. Those without power must find a way to become more powerful, to manifest ways to get what they want. These Delusions are...an equalizer, even if they destroy whom uses them. Even powers do so, with time. Even our own... similar tactics will destroy those that use them eventually. It is the way power works, and those who have the ability to withstand it... will be able to force the world to look on them with a new light. No longer powerless, hm?

[ He, after all, does not know about Kaeya's father, beyond his vision with Kaeya, and had never really asked. IT is not a lack of interest, but instead... Silco often wanted to help him let the past die, even if that was difficult to do. ]

[ Against his redoubled efforts, Akua can feel that attempt to pull her back under, into the dark -- the Night -- yet again. But she knows, knows that her promise, her guilt and her payment to the universe for her truly heinous deed... it cannot be paid back with Zenith. She cannot -- will not -- allow herself to commit this mistake again. She had already once done the unforgivable, and had suffered the consequences.

What would it be, to do so again? What would it be, to suffer this path again, to ignore the growth, and the discoveries she made along the way?

She laughed, in his face.
]

Just evil? Oh, do not doubt my conviction, I am evil, I was born evil, and my pursuit of power is a benediction toward the gods below, even now.

I died to become Calamity, to promise to never destroy as I have done so before, and to help usher an age of order by eliminating those villains who would try to commit atrocities as I have.

Do you think I do not know what it is to commit genocide? That is what Zenith asks of me. To do this again, something that I have promised to never do again, and to keep others from doing it. Simply because this is a new world, is my promise, is my eternal path toward redemption invalid? Should I give it up simply because it is not my world?

[ That ever-blazing sun in Akua's communion is like heat -- a hot desert, parched land, the sun over Praes beating down on a tower that burns in the distance. The creeping darkness of twilight in the horizon, but the sun does not waver, it does not set. In this moment, it is Blazing. ]

[so humble, rosaria despite all the help she's giving him specifically. he'll definitely pick up a bottle of the finest wine kenos has to offer for her and leave it at kaeya's house with her name on it once this is all over.

in any case, though, he has a job to do currently. when he sees just how little blood needs to be shed, he mimics her, reaching out to run his finger along the edge of the blade on her hand for a nice shallow cut. she is absolutely correct in guessing that diluc does not have a fear of blood. in certain cases, he relishes in it. for now, though, he just does what's needed.]

Thank you again. Though I assume this cleansing isn't permanent for now.

[considering she's had to do this multiple times... man, why does this city want him to interact with others so badly. he just wants to be a little longer in peace in his quest to get mondstadt back and take care of kaeya.]

How long should this last?

[ Gray obediently sits up ramrod-straight. She turns over an attempt at a defense in her mind, but gives up straightaway. ]

Um. Then at least let me say I wish you didn't have to experience that...? People should only have to feel one death per lifetime.

[ As morbid as it might be, Gray wishes now that she'd died a faster death. At the very least, it could have been a more heroic death... Instead, it was (in her mind) as slow and pathetic as could be. The belated realization that she had an unexpected audience burns at her cheeks. ]

[well, at least diluc isn't alone in suffering from that affliction. meditating seems to only be amplifying the voices and thoughts rather than pushing them outward, and the lack of peace and quiet even in his own mind is slowly driving diluc further down a path he never wants to go down again.

when zhongli mentions they can perhaps help each other, he perks up. finally, a solution. even if it won't completely fix anything, even just a little reprieve would be nice.

he takes zhongli's hand and pulls himself up, noting the trails of blood and little cuts here and there. how curious.]

Mm, I see. Even a temporary moment of solace would be better than this constant barrage. So please, tell me what I need to do. I will do it.

[ makoto’s questions are achingly reasonable. if dextera were a slightly different person with slightly different experiences, it would likely be enough to break him of his desperate hope for redemption and rise to the call of zenith. but without his memories, without understanding, there is only one path forward. there has only ever been that for him, no matter what roads he might take to circumvent it.

the fact that his purification remains, even now, is proof of that. his existence is undeniable. ]

[ his breath shakes as he looks at himself in the reflection of makoto’s eyes. he knows the world was not kind to him, that he can only see himself when he looks in a mirror. all that’s left of what should have been is the scar on his hip. ]

It… doesn’t deserve it. [ it hurts to admit that; panic rises in his throat, and he’s grateful that he can’t choke on his words. ] I hate that world. It’s brought me nothing but pain. But I… everything that I am is still there. I can’t live like this.

I'm not afraid of choosing, [ he says after a moment. ] There's no room in war for spectators. [ he knows. ] This won't be the first time I've had to choose a side, or be collateral damage in someone else's war.

I didn't think you were one for platitudes.

[ At the edges of Link's perception, a harrowing darkness starts to enclose around him. It is quiet and gentle, but it encroaches without permission, unceremonious in its intent to snuff the last of the Meridian from his soul. His Shard, normally warm to the touch, feels freezing cold, prickling the skin on the back of his hand. Where his palmis laid over his heart, it saps the body heat underneath it — but no, it is not absorbing that heat, but obliterating it outright.

The state of his mind is just as grave. A voice — his own voice — wails sorrowfully that John is right, that Hyrule, and all worlds, and this world too, are all doomed. The young Hylian has seem immeasurable loss in his short yet unnaturally long life, and every ounce of it the seed for a pound of grief. That grief is greater than any burden the Goddesses could have saddled him with. A responsibility for the deaths of countless victims, the enslavement of the ghosts of his friends, and one hundred years of suffering by his princess. Saving Hyrule has been about his redemption, just as much as it was ever about saving his people — but he will never find the redemption he seeks, will he. Even if he did, it would all fall apart eventually. It would all trend towards collapse and disaster.

What's the point of fighting to survive if you will always lose in the end?

The last of his hope is vanishing fast, like an ice cube thrown into a blaze. Only a few more seconds and it would be completely burnt away, replaced by the brand of the Zenith on his soul. But then, cutting through the miasma, is a sharp, horrible pain in his hand. His other hand. Like a screeching alarm clock, it interrupts the spiral long enough for Link's mind to come up for air, just long and barely enough for him to look down at the searing pain. In his hand, his other hand, is the sharp rock he'd picked up for the purpose of drawing his blood for the Trade. He was squeezing his hand so hard that arrow-like point of the stone was driven deep into his palm and now scrapes against his metacarpals.

Gasping, he drops the rock. Gooey, viscous, blood-colored sap begins to ooze uncontrollably from the deep wound. Staring down, watching the foreign compound bleed from his body, gives him a strange and new kind of clarity. This, he knows. Pain and injury. The fear of another death, of becoming permanently disabled in some way such that he could never complete his goals. This hand is his sword hand. He needs this hand. What would he do if he couldn't hold a sword anymore?

What would he do. How would he spend his days. What would he look forward to? And this is the core flaw with the Zenith, at least insofar as it has any application in Link's life. If he were to abandon Hyrule, to stop caring about its fate, then he would essentially abandon the meaning of his very life. He would have no reason to go on, no reason to care about any world, including the new world promised by Yima. If there is "no point" in trying to save his home, there is no point in trying to make a new one either. Because if all of it is pointless then all of it is pointless.

A glowing warmth suddenly rushes back into his Shard. Taken by a sudden panic, Link jumps to his feet, clutching his right hand in his left. He turns and stares down at John with wide, intense eyes.
]

What was that? What did — what are you trying to do to me?

[ He's stunned, angry, hurt, and betrayed. John had just tried to corrupt him, hadn't he? To force himself into Link's soul. To change his mind, to hurt him. His other emotions give way to his anger now. Very few things make the level-headed and mild-mannered Hero openly, visibly angry. Betrayal is one of those things, and at the moment, he is feeling very betrayed. ]

How dare you. How dare you try to... lead me astray...!

[ Once they are both standing, Zhongli pulls his hand back from Diluc's a bit reluctantly. The touch is grounding and calming— the small physical comfort a lifeline in the swirling emotions of all that is going on around them. But in order for this to work, Zhongli is going to need to produce his own Shard (a golden rook that sits above where a heart should be), but he still stubbornly refuses to put Childe's shard down for even a moment.

[ The pieces are similar enough that Silco can see the path that they make. The Doctor, like Singed -- someone funding them, like him. He suspected this Doctor would be just like Singed, only in it for the exploration of how to create power, but oh, the prospect of doing so. Not for themselves, of course, but for the progress it marked. Though Zaun was technically a part of the City of Progress, their own progression had been stilted and shifted, going places where others did not go.

Singed had been largely responsible for much of it, with his shimmer research.
]

I understand, because it is a...similarity. Not just between my world and yours, but others as well. How often are we caught between the Haves and the Have-Nots? How often is power, real power the equalizer that everyone seeks, and must do anything to obtain it -- if they wish to survive.

How broken must all these worlds be, to fall into the same trap? Over and over, without end?

[ Her face is not shocked, but there is an air of gentle surprise in it, the way her mouth opens in a gentle 'o', and the way she looks very nearly taken aback by his statement. It's fervent, and it is... with meaning.

That 'o' transformed into a small smile, as he continued, and she could not help but shake her head.

That is very kind of you, though not something I would truly encourage. Without that which motivated me toward Meridian, I am... [ Here, she pursed her lips, and made a soft popping sound, as she considered how to say what she was thinking. Really, dragging out the truth. ]

I would kill any who stood in my way. I still would now, but I know the meaning of restraint. I was... even further into the throes of madness and villainy, when I was younger.

[ maybe surprisingly, his faint humor only seems to swell, as he listens to her. ]

If you think that would stop me, you don't know me very well.

[ and she doesn't, of course. that's the only reason she would warn him like that. fear of death has not factored into his decisions for a long, long time. he certainly wasn't part of a rebellion because he feared danger, either. not to mention, ]

I can understand believing in something so much, that you would kill for it. [ he wasn't part of a war because his hands were clean, was he? not ever, but especially not now. ] But you're right — it's better not to, when you can.

[diluc nods, taking zhongli's shard before prying out his own from his upper arm. there's a lot of trust in zhongli allowing diluc to handle it, and he shall not betray that trust. he wonders, again, just what is so important in zhongli's other hand that he is willing to hand over his own shard to keep it safe.

in any case, both their shards rest in his gloved palm as he nods once more at zhongli's words. he takes a small dagger from his boot because of course he has one of those.]

Not too much, I assume?

[he presents the blade toward zhongli, as his own hands are currently too full.]
