The Seeds of Unrest: the Iconoclast Oracle

RUNNING OUT THE CLOCK
The situation is bleak.

The Blight - and the massive labyrinth of roots tearing both cities asunder, spreading deadly flowers wherever they penetrate - have progressed to a point beyond catastrophe. People are dying in rapid numbers. Bearers are having difficulty keeping up with the spread of infection - even among one another. The collapse of Kenos seems inevitable; a cure will not come in time. You can do nothing but watch as each new day brings further disaster, ticking down the seconds until it all falls apart.

And then, you feel something seize your Shard. As if physical fingers have wrapped around it, as if it is being clutched through you by invisible hands, you feel invaded. You feel wronged. But before you can panic, a voice enters your mind through Communion.

Excuse the dramatics, but there isn’t much time for pleasantries. The Trees are about to hit the point of no return. But there's still work to be done. The Tree of Life will take you where you can find it: the Oracle and the creature causing all this mess. Fix this when you find them. However you'd like.

Have you heard Aetos’ voice before? Perhaps it is the first time; perhaps it is familiar to you. Either way, the last thing you will remember is a confusing jumble: a spell of immense and incredible power, one utilizing the Tree’s strength to shelter you. The sensation of every cell in your body coming alive, yet seeming to break apart and render you into billions and billions of tiny pieces, all hovering in different times and places across all the different iterations, timelines, and realities in which you have ever existed. A voice that speaks not through words asking your forgiveness, unspeakably sad.

And then, there is nothing.

AWAKENING
Your eyes open, gritty with the feeling of a long, deep slumber.

Perhaps it takes a moment to shake off the heavy veil of exhaustion, to recollect what you were doing before you fell into this state of hibernation - but as soon as you do, you feel an immediate sense of foreboding around you. It is thick in the air, oppressive and pervasive, and you aren’t left long to wonder at its source. You lay beneath the branches of the Tree of Life, but as your bleary eyes focus… you see it. The Tree is all but bereft of life. Its bark has withered down to gnarled wood, the soft lichen dried up, and the grass that should be alive beneath you is long dead and gone. There is not so much as a single leaf on its decaying branches.

It has been this way for a long, long time... you realize this with a feeling of intense dread as you see it - the beautiful expanse of stars, of the cosmos, of universes scattered like starlight above the tree's boughs, gone. In its place hangs a sickly, ominously low-hanging, and dying sun ready to sing the end of everything.

You can't help but wonder how long Kenos has been in this state, but a sense of gratitude fills you as you realize that the Tree expended the last of its energies to protect you, the Bearers, during your state of rest. Had Aetos worked with the tree to see you sent here?

The next question comes quickly: how much time do you have left…? And can you find the Oracle before that time expires?

ABANDON HOPE (DAYS 1 & 2)
The cornerstones are still active and will take you to whichever city you wish to see.

Highstorm and Springstar sit like empty monuments to the cities that were once filled with life - yet the first thing you will notice is they are strangely absent the signs of the Tree’s overgrown roots, the Blight, the catastrophic damage that you can recall all too easily. Instead, each city sits as those they were summarily abandoned overnight, leaving nothing but their shells behind. There is a stillness in the air that is unnatural and unsettling. Despite the lack of any sign of the citizens of either city, you cannot help but feel… watched.

Something terrible happened here. Best you find the Oracle before something terrible finds you, instead.

The burning of a dying sun beats down on you wherever you go, unbearable heat sending waves off the aged cobblestone streets. Perhaps it is your instinct to seek refuge in the shade - but linger too long about the shadows and that feeling of eyes on your back, of being unable to breathe, of your world closing in around you will grow untenable and drive you back into the light. If you hope to explore the ghostly shell of your city in search of the Oracle - or to sate your curiosity, some problem-solving might be in order.

And while you acclimate yourself to your circumstances, you cannot help but note you feel wrong inside, somehow…

EXPLORATION

  • If your characters choose to explore previously unreachable areas, please use THIS TOPLEVEL to report when they get there in the thread! We will get back to you with what is discoverable in that location.
  • The following areas are off limits for exploration: below Yima’s Manor; below the Church of Heliopolis; Alenroux; Kowloon.
  • The Great Trees of both Highstorm and Springstar are in a similar state to the Tree of Life and will not respond to Communion.
  • Generally speaking, items will be of poor quality. Most will look as though they’ve aged thousands of years. Others will be in half-decent shape, but sparingly so. Oddly enough, it doesn’t seem like the whole city has aged at the same rate, so especially diligent rummagers can find worthwhile supplies. Please consider this should be rare and don’t go overboard!

NOTES

Here are some prompt reminders - see the full thing at the OOC Summary!
  • Characters will have a diluted connection to the Zenith or Meridian.
  • There will be periods powers are weakened or non-functional during days 1-2 (up to player discretion).
  • The sunlight results in scorching; the shadows cause claustrophobia and fear while outdoors.
THE RITUAL (DAYS 2+)
The place you started your journey to Kenos is also where it seems it will end. As soon as the first Bearer makes contact with the Iconoclast effigy, you are collectively drawn to the roots beneath the Tree - like a pang sent through your Shard. Your objective has been found. The Oracle awaits.

Trusting Aetos seems like a fool's errand, but you must put your hope in the Tree. What choice do you have left? It's time to find what lies at the end of this.

Bearers descend, your steps echoing in the dark, cavernous space. Once brimming with life and vitality, the roots are now dried and brittle like the bones of some ancient leviathan that died long ago. As you make their way deeper into the earth, the deadened roots twist, leading you to a vast chamber deep within it; the air here is thick with the smell of decay, and the faint glow of luminescent fungi and mosses barely illuminates the space.

To your left, the Bearers will notice what has drawn them here - and the object of their search.

An effigy sits on the ground between two darkened tunnels. The effigy is made of gnarled, dead branches woven together in a humanoid shape; its hollow, empty eyes are sightless, yet you cannot help but feel it is watching your every move. Branded on its forehead is the Iconoclast symbol carved into the rough wood.

Once all Bearers are present, the Ritual will begin. Your means of exit have been sealed off, and you are trapped, slowly deteriorating together…

NOTES

  • Bearers will have access to the Ritual Chamber which is a very wide, open space with the effigy situated against the far wall from the entrance. Several smaller tunnels off-shoot from the Ritual Chamber. They all run to dead ends; some are very small or narrow. This may afford you meager privacy away from the group.
  • Once a Bearer steps into the Chamber, they can no longer head back out the way they came. They’ll find themselves automatically walking back into the Chamber as if of their own volition.
  • For brevity’s sake we won’t list them out again here, but the complete description of effects Bearers will experience days 2+ is available in the OOC Summary.
  • The effigy is impervious to damage.
  • It Is Watching You.
  • In a dead-end root tunnel attached to the Iconoclast’s Chamber is the Blighted statue of an Otter that may be familiar to some… Please see THIS TOPLEVEL for more information!
THE PURGE (DAYS 5+)
The sap has festered in your veins for what feels like days. It’s impossible to tell how much time has passed; this place has no sunlight. The effigy watches as you remain trapped, huddled together around it, unable to leave as you find yourself sick with the affliction of the Meridian, Zenith - or both.

And then… something finally gives.

Though it does not move and speaks no words, you feel the effigy offering you guidance. Knowledge. Much like the Tree speaks to you in impressions and feelings, you are conveyed wisdom you did not have before: a way to take what you want and rid yourself of what you do not. A way to make your convictions known to all who would hear them. A way to be known. To write your path in blood, be it yours… or theirs.

When all is said and done, only one force - Zenith or Meridian - will gain its favor.

Show it who you are. Show it what resolve looks like to you - and what you are willing to do to attain it.

NOTES

Here are some prompt reminders - see the full thing at the OOC Summary!
  • You can Purge your alignment through various methods: Trading, Corrupting, or using the Effigy itself.
  • All characters will understand the end goal is for everyone to Harmonize; the alignment with the higher rate of Harmonized Bearers alive when time’s up wins the Oracle’s favor.
NOTES
  • A reminder that the Harmonization tally will take place on Friday, the 19th and be open through Monday, the 29th. The results will be released on Wednesday, the 31st OOCly.
  • Don’t forget to submit any deaths to the Death Tracker, with a gentle reminder characters will remain dead until the event conclusion!
  • Reminder to fill out the SETTING POLL ASAP if you haven't already!
  • Have some MUSIC if you'd like. LYRICS here!
  • HAVE FUN!!

If I had the option of going back or taking my sister to a new world I think I'd go with the latter. Doing so might make her happier.

[Despite all the haunting hallucinations... after a couple rounds of trading (though still with a bit of Meri in her) she finds herself calmed with the idea. Of taking her sister to a new world where her body won't be so corrupted. Where those worms won't be writhing under her skin and Grail wouldn't be tempting her with its vile words.]

You have me, then.

[ He breathes it. Drying the tears that spill from his eyes, seeking to hold her fast. The expression on his face twists, into a toothy sneer. A vicious little smile of defiance.

His balance skews towards Meridian in effort, and Zenith in existence; he straddles the line between two factions, repulsed and straining to hold not their ideologies, but their people fast to him. A difficult, impossible task that will tear him in two. He would burn this world if it meant ensuring the ones he has come to care for will ride a wave of horror to the things they desire, and he will be able to return to his own realm and do his duty once more. He is drawn to either side because they are a means to an end, and those means may fluctuate over time. Adapt and transform, but regardless of them —

she will have him, through all that comes their way. That much, he is certain of.

Ruby begins to let herself down, to loosen her grip upon him and badly, badly he wants to keep holding her. She is miserable, she gives him meaning beyond that which he might deserve; dangerous, insane meaning. He is miserable, and he does something for her that the two of them cannot put words to, but understand implicitly between them. As her mouth brushes along the corner of his, he reaches up. Slow. To cup his hands across the exterior of her hair ( he does not sink his fingers into her tresses, he would not like it, his own hair is long and has been gripped by so many brutal hands — ), to gather it up and loop it around itself. To take up a stray root, two, and pin her hair atop her head.

Out of her face, out of the way of grabbing hands or debris. ]

— you are mine. No leader, nor force, will obscure that now, Ruby.

[ For her, he presses his nose to her forehead. To the center of her brow where he breathes her in, deep and slow. Run, he urges her in impressions and wild energy, like a coursing hound or lunging crocodile, hide, survive for me. ]

Yes… I like the company, when I have a chance to cook with someone else. That’s why I started teaching classes at the community centre.

[He doesn’t really need the pocket change at this point, especially considering many of the people who attend his classes pay by saying, Come by my shop! You can get something on the house, or by offering to teach him something in return. But he likes teaching, and the habit is one that he looks forward to most weeks, unless he’s simply too busy to spare the time.]

I used to feel unwell very often, before I was brought here. Almost all the time.

[Turning to regard his wood stove, he discovers that the iron has corroded badly enough that it would probably be a fire hazard to try to use it. There’s still the hearth, though; he steps over to it and crouches down so he can start getting a fire together.]

Less so, of late. Though it helps when I can stay out of the sun.

[So, he does admittedly feel about as bad as he looks, after his trek through the city.]

[ her sister.

right; her sister. Vash's mind travels back to their shared dream, though he tries not to linger on it long - with Communion as sharp and easy to share as it is, he doesn't want to beam bad vibes back into Rin's head unintentionally. ]

[ Akua's smile turns sharp, almost... indulgent, a touch predatory. ]

Well, if you could get rid of me any time you wanted... it must mean you don't want to at all, doesn't it?

[ Sweetly, she asks, though there's always that edge. Akua Sahelian was a Villainess, and it shows in even the ways that she teases, and flirts. ]

I'm pacing, because Zenith fits me like a well-fitting dress. I do not wish it to, but it still hangs on me, and tries to convince me that I would fit.

Have you ever tried to change your fate, Misa? Have you ever tried to change yourself for the better?

[he can absolutely trust rosaria, as contradictory as it sounds due to her "suspect" appearance. and if she's seen things here and there and hasn't come to threaten diluc? he can trust her to not be judgmental about anything either. though he wouldn't blame her if she did.

he nods. he doesn't like to pry, but he gets the feeling that their memories will likely be shared through this process with or without a desire to actually see them. he had a few thoughts about rosaria and her past before, but nothing he seriously looked into. she protected mondstadt, and that was good enough for him.

he grabs his from his upper arm (it takes a little maneuvering due to his long sleeves, but he gets it in the end without looking too much like an idiot), still feeling a little strange about the whole shard thing even though it's been a couple of months. he hands it over to her without hesitation, which says a lot about the extent of which he trusts her.

also, kaeya and she are besties. and kaeya doesn't trust easily.]

[ 'I am,' Dextera says, and his heart twinges. But at the same time, it's strangely easy to accept that ache in his chest. He gets it, after all -- Dextera is someone who belongs on that side, a place that someone like him never should have stepped foot in. 'I will,' Dextera says, and Gen gives a shuddering sigh of relief.

Dextera isn't Reiji, someone hollow he needs to keep close by force, because otherwise he'll simply drift away. Dextera, at least, will look at him -- look at him properly -- even if their paths diverge. ]

Alright. [ They're close, he realizes only now, as he sees the shuttering of Dextera's lashes as his gaze shifts. It feels only natural to let his head drop forth until their foreheads touch. ] You promised.

[ Maybe the next time this insane places throws them into another mess, it'll be as enemies. That's fine. So long as he knows Dextera is where he's meant to be, and will face him properly, he can tolerate that. Probably.

But maybe he'll be forgiven for extending this moment just a little longer, before he has to let go. It isn't even an entirely conscious gesture when he leans in -- uncharacteristically tentative, pulsing a desperate neediness from his very core -- to kiss Dextera on the corner of his lips. ]

[ Akua lifted a single eyebrow. ]

Have you met some of those in Zenith?

[ She asked, her tone amused. It's a lofty ideal, and one she cannot say is not...attractive. But a perfect world would be... Akua thinks it would be boring. Even an Age of Order that her own world had been on the cusp of, would she have been able to truly live and thrive in it, instead of guide it? She does not know if she would have survived the change, without burning up like a torrent of fire. ]

I do not even know of gods that have succeeded in such a task, so I cannot imagine that such a group like Zenith would be able to. Not without culling most of it, excising the rot that lingers at the edges of both of our factions.
wolof: I craved the taste of it (A poison so sweet)

[personal profile] wolof 2023-06-07 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
The Gods can punish --

[ She hedged, but shook her head, even so. It's...sad. To see someone so caught up in the misfortune, that in Akua's estimation, she will never break that chain, and step outside of it. Ruby should, she thinks, step outside of whatever cycle she's found herself in. Everyone should. It is difficult, she knows -- oh, how Akua knows -- but the gods Above and Below were not for punishment beyond the moment. The Great Game continued, and if souls were not simply lost to oblivion, and were reborn as some believed...

Why would they bother with punishment, when there were so many other things to deal with?
]

Though why would they? You're clearly doing the work for them.

[ It's not... sharp, though... her tone is a touch harder, though not quite sharp, or accusing. ] The gods so rarely intervene directly, dear.

I would know.
wolof: (modern)

[personal profile] wolof 2023-06-07 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Mm, I would have said the same, when I arrived.

[ She admitted. Akua did not spend long without her gift, had chosen a side if only so that she could use her gift once more. She was nothing without it, and even as a shade, she had wrenched power from the ether, used Catherine's connection to Winter, or Night, or anything to make sure she had it. She would do anything, even sign on with a side, just to do so.

Though... why she had chosen Meridian, had been a choice. There was a reason, all the same. She sighed, and looked at her hands in her lap. She does not crowd Cassian, but she takes up space all the same, as she looked down.
]

You will have to choose one, or the other, lest you be left behind by the great and terrible powers we use. There will be no place for those who cannot choose, I fear. Even the stalwart heart who thinks both are guilty of crimes, will need to choose something. Though both... seem to be willing to let us go, as we choose.

Perhaps that will change, but for now at least, your decision can be made freely. Without losing the ability to choose later.

What, preserve what little is left?

[ He finished for him -- asked -- but the tone is sardonic and biting. His lips curled with disdain as his eyes swiveled to take in the details of the sun, the heat, and then the everything else. He shook his head. ]

Even if there wasn't, it doesn't matter.

It's going to be destroyed anyway --

[ He held a hand to his mouth, and laughed, mock-put upon. ]

Silly me. That's the Zenite in me talking. Well, perhaps bringing back our own worlds with the Oracles will... [ He said it dourly, the line of Meri, with a lack of emotion, like he was reading a script. ]
zauneyete: (Just in case you missed it)

[personal profile] zauneyete 2023-06-07 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
All worlds have an order? Of course they do.

[ He says, though as he agrees, it is biting, and sharp. Bitter.

It is good that Liem does not talk about people dying comfortably, and happily, because Silco holds... such hate, for people like that. Who died warm in their beds and surrounded by family, after subjugating his land, his citybright that he is going to lose the wick, and burn out entirely, quickly. It's something others can see, and though he knows it is the case, he does not care -- for to care was to accept that he should be a dead man.
]

The order of my world sees us as children toiling in mines. Dead at early ages. To try and rise up is to be kicked back down.

I do not believe in the "order" of worlds, because they are established by powers that have grown fat and happy on the the fruits of our labors, to become swollen with what they do not create. Any "gods" of worlds watch this happen, watch people like me rise up as children to try and find a future, only to be kicked down, and mutilated -- [ Tap tap, against his eye. That hateful, unblinking thing that burns. ] -- for simply trying to find a better life.

Why are any worlds so worth preserving, when that is the order you so ascribe to? Why resurrect so much suffering, when there's something better in the end?

[ Silco does not believe he will reach the new world, but he will make sure it is there. For one person, and one person only. ]

I got brought to Horos, silly. [ Her smile turns a bit wry, and her head tilts. ] I'm sure if I'd stayed, that person would've changed the world for the better...

[ What Liem says is true, after all — that a strong system of justice is paramount. She's glad that he gets it, that he can understand that sometimes there are people who are never protected by the systems in place that are meant to. ]

But that person... there was still so much work to do for them. They were just one person, but they were punishing evil all over the world. The police were after them, and there were times when they weren't able to do their work because of it, you know? I think I could make it easier in the new world. Not having to worry about getting caught and stuff...

You will.... at the end of all this.

[ "All this" being the Oracle war, that is... Misa won't doubt for a second that Zenith will prevail, because - well, they have to. That resolve burns clear through her words, soft as they are. ]

You know, [ she bumps a shoulder with his, ] I have my dad's shard, too. He and my mom were murdered about three years ago... Yima told me I could bring them back, in the new world.

[ There's a slight twinkle in her eye when the other woman actually admits to it — creating worlds. What interesting people over on the Meridian side. ]

I'm okay with it. As long as I can bring the people I love back... then that's nothing! Misa would figure something out, or a way to help it.

[ Or she wouldn't, and she wouldn't really care all that much... there's a flippancy and irresponsibility to her response, like she truly and genuinely has not thought about it that far, were the world she creates to be full of terrible people. She's always had something of a stubborn confidence, especially ever since her Death Note fell into her hands; she feels almost certain she could rid the world of whatever people would directly inconvenience or potentially harm her or the people she loves. And that's about all who matters. She doesn't care much about the rest of the world outside of Kira's grand ideals, and never has. ]

And this is the part where you try to convince me it's better to go back to the way things were, huh?

[ Even that is said playfully, despite sounding less upbeat than she usually might on account of the infection bogging her down. Still, her eyes are curious and inquisitive, boring in to the other woman's with a certain expectation. ]

[ "doing the work for them"? all that despair goes still and placid, Ruby's mind wiped completely blank—and then it rises up in a sudden flash of incandescent fury, scorching her lungs and licking up her throat. it's not directed at Akua, not with any such precision; it seems more like the manner in which a wounded animal snaps its teeth at anyone reaching out to save it. appropriately, the laughter that wrenches itself from Ruby is a bark: ]

Ha! So it's my fault? I'm just not trying hard enough? Of course, anything is possible if you just take things into your own hands and pull yourself up by your bootstraps, is that it?

[ Akua wants her to think that there is no such cycle, and yet here she is, saying the exact same thing that Rudbeckia has heard so many dozens of times before in her lives. any time she finally broke down and begged for help, that was the reason she never received it from even the kindest and most well-meaning souls. people love to tell her that she can change her own life, that she's wallowing in self-pity, that God helps those who help themselves. she's so fucking tired of hearing it.

but the cool waters of Zenith's energy douse her anger, and even the embers fade out. although her bitter smile remains, the spark is gone from Ruby's gaze. ]

It doesn't matter. There are things I've been through that can't— [ she swallows ] can't be explained any other way. Maybe it's not like that where you come from, but for me...

[ in this frenzied state of Communion, even their opposing Aspects are able to connect with enough clarity that Akua sees a memory through Rudbeckia's eyes – through the eyes of a child, her knuckles sore and marked by red welts, hands trembling as she holds them out under a teacher's cold stare. God punishes liars, █████, she is told, and she knows without doubt that it is true. even now, the knowledge is rooted deep in her heart. do good, and be rewarded; do bad, and be punished. and she tried, but there is a stain on her soul that simply will not wash out. ]

And it's happening again now. Everything here is the same.

[ that helpless feeling that surrounds Rudbeckia is inescapable, someone who lives every day with the awareness of a guillotine hanging over their head and nowhere to go that it won't follow. ]

[ dextera finds himself frowning, not at the idea that kenos would soon meet its end, but rather than the meridian ideal is worth mocking. he’s always taken the differences between the two factions with grace, treated the zenith perspective as reasonable if not incompatible with what dextera wants, and it stings to not have that returned in kind.

not that he really expected silco to.

[Vague impressions and thoughts bleed into the Communion between them whether they like it or not, just as everyone's hearts have been leaking into the heads of everyone else around them in the suffocating ritual chamber. Not thoughts that are fully formed, nothing like reading minds...

But something like a sense of sameness, somehow. She had always locked such useless thinking away, knowing nothing good came of curiosity in a breeding stable mare, but once she had become a captive in that hidden village in the mountains, surrounding by free members of her kind (even if they were mostly children and infants)... Had she not begun to wonder what it was like? The life of a jinba born into the field or the forest. What it was like to be raised by jinba parents who desired you as a daughter, and not by human grooms investing in your future sale price? Would she have learned the same things Matsukaze had from his father, who learned from his father, who learned from his father? Could she have grown to worship the Great Mountain as they did?

... It was pointless to consider now. She would never know, because even if she could return to her world... she would die within a day.]

I understand.

[She certainly has plenty of things she'd rather not discuss.

But she would remember the word "Nabatean". As a courtesy. And she would discuss herself just enough to answer,]

... I am a jinba.

[It feels almost wrong to say "we are".]

[ The contrasting state of their two souls, made compatible by their shared Aspect yet diametrically opposed by their Harmonization, is too difficult for Link to make sense of. Although it isn't clear why the Zenith's influence is still so strong within his Shard, it's clear that Link is fighting back against it with everything he can muster — emotionally, spiritually, mentally. But it's hard. The past month has been so hard. The situation with the Blight did not exactly inspire hope. And their teleportation to this empty, broken future Kenos didn't either.

The longer their thoughts flow freely between each other, the more clear Link's reasons for being such a mess will be. It isn't Cid's fault that his Meridian didn't help. Link is just that much of a mess right now.

The young Hylian presses his face into his hands and takes a deep breath. With all that he's struggling with, he has Cid's hopelessness to grapple too.

How? How are you so... so content... with never seeing him again...?

[ It's so thoroughly the opposite of Link's fervent desires, and yet, he recognizes the love Cid feels for that person. So how is it possible? ]

[The mention of the war god, or rather, his ridiculous deal that he had attempted to convince her was somehow a good idea, somehow going to be useful to Meridian as if it wasn't just inviting infected dogs into one's own house... it makes her lip curl up in a disgusted sneer, baring the sharp, sharp canines that don't seem to fit with either her human-looking or equine parts.]

Helping how?

[Details, Dextera??? There's a fine line between too little and too much! If it was topside it would have been before the Oracle laid out it's conditions, so perhaps Silco had not yet begun to sabotage Meridian from his cushy new position within should-be enemy lines, but...

Somehow, she doubted it. That one-eyed gaki...]

Jinba.

[Byleth repeated the word slowly. It was a foreign word to him, but still, he ensured to memorise the exact pronunciation. Jinba. Not 'centaur' as Fodlan tales would've called her. He didn't bother raising this pointless bit of trivia, though - she had already told him the correct name for her people.]

Thank you. [He exhaled quietly - not quite a laugh. It was too wry a noise.] For indulging me and listening. I'll be sure not to forget your name or race for as long as time permits.

[He usually had an excellent memory, but tended to be a little sketchier with names - no point remembering them in general when most of his interactions with others tended to be fleeting, either due to travel or because they were on the business end of his sword. Meridian, as well, he only exerted effort in learning the names of those who were of interest in some way... and Hayame was now securely in that camp, shuffled from the clinical label of "ally by necessity" to simply: "ally".]
