the second skeleton immediately falling into a pile of its requisite pieces as soon as it crossed the threshold of the door was interesting, to say the least. it certainly doesn't give john any strong desire to try to cross over it himself.
it seems to him like aetós might have been trying to puzzle out the hidden intricacies of this magic — this necromancy — by replicating experiments that john was familiar with (which he had devised himself, even), but they can go about speculating over their purpose and motivation some other time.
