It adds a unique factor to otherwise standard political considerations, since from the sounds of it, conquering it for one of the other would only be a short-term gain.

There are creatures that emerge during the night, apparently, and ones that are no minor trifle. They are quite capable of killing even powerful Shard-Bearers, based on a brief story she told me. [ He shrugs ] Now, the rest must be taken with a grain of salt, as who knows where the line between reality and a tantalizing story lies, but… If true, it sounds as if these creatures may be drawn more to Shard-Bearers.
